How do you Pronounce That " Name "

Ok so i was bored at work and was done reading Reapers Gale. I wanted to do something interesting, its probably been done, since im fairly new. But everytime I read these books, I wonder how everyone else who reads these books pronounces the characters. Ever wonder about that? probably just me lol.
So i decided to write down how I pronounce some of these chracters in the books. Now my descriptions of these pronunciation isnt to the level of dictionary.com but I just it to the best of my abilities.
Some things to keep in mind. This is how I pronounce them, doesnt mean its the right way, but it would be interesting to find out how others do. Im of an ethnic descent, so our vocabulary has a few more sounds and letters in our alphabet then say for north americans.
Notes - For the letter "U" I used it alot for people like Rake,Paran,Rhulad,Laseen and so on. I just want you to know I say it like " Run " or " gun " or Nun ". so for Rake its " Mun " Der.
I think it will be interesting to see how others pronounce these names. Perhaps North americans may say Anomander like " Man"der. instead of "Mun". Im also in Toronto Canada so that would be a wrong assumption, however toronto is very diverse in culture. For Andarist, perhaps some say it like " ann-Dar-Ist ".
Anyway im getting carried away. Now we can see how people say the names in there heads while reading. Heres my pronunciations. Feel free to add yours.
I left the obvious ones out, just ones that I find might differntiate between readers. I probably missed a few obvious ones.
Keep in Mind the " U " please. Its important for alot of the pronunciations. Laseen- is Lus like ( Gus )
Rhulad - Roo-Lud
Karsa Orlong - Car-saw-Orr-Long
Duiker- Doo-Keer
Coltain - Col-Tay-Ne
Apsalar - Up-Sul-Arr

hmm.. as far as I am aware Steve pronounces (mostly) the letters as they are ..
Malazan = Malla - zan
Tiste - Tyste
not sure why you make a's into u's?
Anomander rake is not Anomunder Rake
Dassem Ultor is not Dussem...etc etc

Just because its spelled in a certain way doesnt mean its pronounced in such a way.
Dont forget these people like Rake are ancient characters and he has changed his name to make it easier for people to say it.
You sound offended almost.
Its quite possible for Dassem he doesnt pronounce is " Das ( gas) ". It could be " Dus ( gus) "
For Rake the MAN part perhaps is not pronounced like how we say MAN. Its quite possible its Munder. To me it makes sense that way. No thats wrong, not sense. to me I say it the way I think it sounds and im happier saying it that way.
Like I said im not saying my way is right. Was just doing something interesting in my mind.
Dont get offended Hetan.
And as for "Hetan" - I say " Hey-Tun " not Hey-Tan ( like tanning).
And also keep in mind my UN sound is not a quick " un " like " Run ". No its more of a dragged on Un sound.

I'm not offended
Just curious as to your ancestry is more the point...
the displacement of a for u for instance is curious.
A discussion with SE is in the offing, so please post your speculation

There's an entire thread somewhere dedicated to dsicussing pronunciation. Someone with more motivation than me can linky to it or merge the threads.

No Speculation.
Just want to see how people pronounce them.
Im Of Indian Descent ( not native indian ).
Some of the names and words SE has i have seen similarities in our culture. Some not all.
So to me Saying AnoMunder is cooler than AnoMANder. Thats all :-)

I remember Rake saying in GOTM "My name, as best as it can be pronounced by humans, is Anomander Rake." Well, his real name ain't that hard. Anomandaris Dragnipurake.

Aha! But is that his real full name? Or is it just what some people call him because it's easier but closer to the full?

Or, we've seen Anomandaris Ipurake. So we have to assume that it could be anything, really.....

Personally I try not to think about pronunciation too much. One of the joys of reading FF is that you can say stuff pretty much however you want. A friend of mine that I got into the books a couple of years ago says some things completely differently(wrongly) to the way I do. We've had many a jovial argument about it and are pretty much agreed that we're both(I am) right.
I guess if Hetan says 'Steve pronounces it this way', you can't really argue though.

Nope no argument here.
Just wanted to see how others pronounced the names and such. Tis all. Its interesting to know how others are pronouncing the names.
Is there anyway to find out for sure how SE would say it in his head?
Then again I dont think he would disclose that kind of info, as he wants us the reader to have our own ideas while reading.
Like I said theres no right or wrong. To each there own.
If I started saying "Ann"no"man"der" as of now I wouldnt enjoy the books as much.

I'm more curious about which syllables people stress, and whether they pronounce all or do the silent-e-at-the-end type thing.
Kil-MAN-dar-os or Kil-man-DAR-os? LETH-er-ii or Leth-ER-ii? And is it Ga-no-es or more Ga-knows?
For Rake, it seems natural to say A-no-MAN-der - but with the full name, I want to say A-no-man-DAR-is, which makes the whole thing feel a little odd...

I think that's interesting, cause I think his name sounds cooler when you say MAN instead of MUN. I think MUN sounds kinda silly... Specially when it's clearly an A!

Honestly though, besides your A/U thing, and your using the "oooo" sound for U's in words like Jaghut (I say JAG-HUT, as in a HUT that a hermit might live in) your phonetics are more or less the same as mine. I really dislike your A/U thing though!

Thanks :-)
Like I said to me the Mun and Un makes me happier.
But the JagHUT no way! :-)
I definately say JagHoot!
It would really be cool to see how SE says these names.
I would be suprised if he meant JagHUT!

for me the h in jaghut is pretty much silent. jag-ut is how i say it.
@ottataral dragon, i say rake's names the same way. but try saying ano MAN daris. it puts a neat little tweak in there.

I have a friend who pronounces it "yaa-goot" because he thinks they're "clearly" of german design. Cold and old, I guess?
Anyone else say it Karsa "oar-long"?
