And yes, old people make funny faces alot!

I quote William Gibson, author of Neuromancer:
Quote
"To put [the election] in perspective, I think of being on an airplane. The flight attendant comes down the aisle with her food cart and, eventually, parks it beside my seat. "Can I interest you in the chicken?" she asks. "Or would you prefer the platter of shit with broken glass in it?" To be undecided in this election is to pause for a moment and then ask how the chicken is cooked.'"
Now, it's up to you to decide which candidate is the chicken, but honestly, if you haven't made up your mind after all these long months of campaigning, you're stupid. Heck, the last undecideds I knew hopped off a fence when Palin got picked for the VP slot.
Falco: Jindal withdrew himself from consideration. This may be my own political views poking through here, but I think he smelt a loser and wanted to wait for another cycle.

amphibian, even with your Gibson quote, I would probably refuse the undercooked overpriced chicken and go without both selections.
For this first time in my voting life, I regret to say I am abstaining.

Now granted I am not American and therefore can't vote I think it is absolutely rediculous why you wouldn't!?!
One, at the moment the world is in crisis on more then one front and therefore your vote is even more important then usual.
Two, its a freakin privlege. We get to decide on our leaders while many countries still can't.
Three, the last election showed us all how even one vote can make a difference and you can't tell me that Obama and McCain are worse than candidates in previous elections? (Bush and Gore? Spare me!)
I don't understand why people don't vote the election in Canada earlier this month had record lows, I could vote for the first time this year and I don't intend on passing up this privledge.
Get your lazy asses up and vote people!
I have returned anew, wistfully my course holds true.

Does Abstaining mean you don't show up and vote or that you show up but check a box that says neither?
In Denmark you can show up with your votingballot and hand it in without voting for any of the dozen or so parties that we have. It's sort of a way of showing your appreciation of your democratic right to vote but without having to vote for anyone.
I've used that option the last three times I've been allowed to vote. Personally, I don't like our party system here in Denmark. None of the parties serve more than a few of my interests. I'd be much more interested in a Student Party that could look out for my financial, educational and social interests.
I certainly do not believe that I should have to place a vote on the lesser of two evils just because I hate the other candidate more.

You do know that absentee ballots are only counted if they are needed in a close election, right? And, those are the kind that are far easier to "lose" or "alter"? If you are willing to run that risk then go ahead, but there is no way I am willing to take the risk that my vote "doesn't matter."
@Shin: You seriously can't find enough of a difference between the two candidates to figure out which one is more suited to you? Now, I certainly don't want to encourage you to vote for McCain, but come on now... exercise your constitutionally endowed and protected privilege and right in someone you believe would be a good president. Not Voting is Not Good.
Trouble arrives when the opponents to such a system institute its extreme opposite, where individualism becomes godlike and sacrosanct, and no greater service to any other ideal (including community) is possible. In such a system rapacious greed thrives behind the guise of freedom, and the worst aspects of human nature come to the fore....

Washington most likely won't even be close. We're pretty liberal out here. If it is close, then it'll get counted. BAsically though, I can't afford to take a day off work to vote. And I'm lazy. And the dems should carry washington easily.
HAven't heard from you for a while.

A day off work?
The voting offices aren't open all day? At elections I think you can vote from early morning to late evening here in Denmark.
EDIT: Wooo, 6000th post. I don't know whether to laugh or cry.

Yea you can vote from about 7am until 8 or 9 pm here.
RLY is just being lazy, or maybe he has hot plans for the wife on tuesday night.
Lots of people around here are saying the same thing as RLY, and it worries me because it means McCain is getting your vote. Do you think the McCain backers are going to sit around and not vote? That is the ONLY chance McCain has at this point, that Obama's supporters are lazy and assume they have won, and so don't vote.
Bah.

If it was laziness or apathy causing me not to vote, then I'd be mad at me too.
But I think both candidates are platters of shit with broken glass in them.
I suppose I could just write someone in, but either way, since I am making a concious decision I don't feel I'm abandoning my duty as a voting American. If I'm not allowed to abstain out of protest, then voting is no longer a privilage but an enforced ritual.

Hey, check it out: maps of red/blue distribution in the 2004 election, first by county winner, then taking margin of victory into account, then taking population distribution into account:

Oh no! It's...not a donkey, or an elephant, but a fish! With legs!

Yeah I know, I was talking about Palin in the context of future selections.
I still can't believe the Republicans thought a campaign of "He's a Commie! He's a terrorist! He's a cheese-eating surrender monkey! He's an alien from outer space!" would work

In one way it would be really amazing if a very young, black democrat was elected president. As a European I'd prefer a democrat on the throne in the US.
On the other hand, if McCain is elected I have no doubt that the situation in the middleeast is going to become even more FUBAR. I will wager serious money that within 4 years America has exchanged blows with Iran and the whole thing goes up like a powderkeg. This sounds really bad but there's little crazy voice in the back of my head that's shouting "weeee the news is going to become exciting again!".
