Which duel?
So, you're the historian who survived the Chain of Dogs.
Actually, I didn't.
It seems you stand alone.
It was ever thus.

"We go to partake of death. And it is in these moments, before the blades are unsheathed, before blood wets the ground and screams fill the air, that the futility descends upon us all. Without our armour, we would all weep, I think. How else to answer the impending promise of incalculable loss?
- Deadhouse Gates
"Redeem them, sir! It is your task. The heart of your vows - you are the walker among the dead in the field of battle, you are the bringer of peace, the redeemer of the fallen. You are the mender of broken lives. Without you, death is senseless, and the denial of meaning is the world's greatest crime to its own children."

Another great one:
"Come, try me, immortals, so all of you can learn.
Hang a great golden cable down from the heavenslay hold of it, all you gods, all goddesses too:you can never drag me down from sky to earth, not Zeus, the highest, mightiest king of kings, not even if you worked yourselves to death. But whenever I'd set my mind to drag you up,in deadly earnest, I'd hoist you all with ease, you and the earth, you and the sea, all together, then loop that golden cable round a horn of Olympus, bind it fast and leave the whole world dangling in mid-air—that is how far I tower over the gods, I tower over men." - Zeus, from The Illiad

BLADE OF TYSHALLE by Matthew Effing Stover said:
There are some who say that Time is itself a hammer; that each slow second marks another tap that makes big rocks into little rocks, waterfalls into canyons, cliffs into beaches.
There are some who say that Time is instead a blade. They see the dance of its razored tip, poised like a venomous snake, forever ready to slay faster than the eye can see.
And there are some who say that Time is both hammer and blade.
They say the hammer is a sculptor's mallet, and the blade is a sculptor's chisel: that each stroke is a refinement, a perfecting, a discovery of truth and beauty within what would otherwise be blank and lifeless stone.
And I name this saying wisdom.

"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

Another one, just because it's so awesome:
Blade of Tyshalle said:
He flexed his hands and cracked his knuckles one by one: a series of flat, deliberate clicks of lethal intent, like bullets being loaded into a pistol.

Elder Scrolls 5 - Skyrim, Dark brotherhood storyline
Don't shoot me if its not 100%, but i believe it goes:
"What is the music of life?"
"Silence dear Brother"
"...Welcome"
Did a litlle fanboy squel of glee with that invitation.

On my eleventh read of my favorite book, Richard Adams' Shardik, this passage really jumped out at me for the first time. It's the final sentence that's the clincher, but it needs the context of the entire paragraph for the full effect. A wonderful statement on storytelling in general.
Quote
They tell--ah! they tell many things of Shardik's passing from Bekla, and of the manner of his setting out upon his dark journey to that unforeseeable destination appointed by God. Many things! For how long, then, was he at large within the walls of Bekla, under Crandor's summit? For as long, perhaps, as a cloud may take, in the eyes of a watcher, to pass across the sky? A cloud passes across the sky and one sees a dragon, another a lion, another a towered citadel or blue promontory with trees upon it. Some tell what they saw and then others tell what they were told--many things. They say that the sun was darkened as Lord Shardik departed, that the walls of Bekla opened of their own accord to let him pass, that the trepsis, once white, has bloomed red since that day when the prints of his feet bloodied its flowers in passing. They say that he wept tears, that a warrior raised from the dead went before him with a drawn sword, that he was made invisible to all but the king. They tell many, shining things. And of what value is the grain of sand at the heart of a pearl?
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? Is that verbatim, Briar King? As far as I can recall, the quote is 'Mess with mortals, Poliel, and you pay.'
uhm, that should be 'stuff.' My stiff is never nihilistic.

Eriksons quote about life after death is just brilliant, and of course "Children dies" and then we got the sentence that summary the hole black company "Soldiers live and wonder why" - Glen Cook.

Long time lurker, brand new poster. This topic has been a great read and has inspired me to read some of the books mentioned here.
On topic, I'd like to add the full quote from Glen Cook's book because it made the most impact on me at the end of the series.
"Soldiers live. He dies and not you, and you feel guilty, because you're glad he died, and not you. Soldiers live, and wonder why."
― Glen Cook, Soldiers Live
Hit me like a sack of bricks.
