This is not a contest, merely a place to record your favorite quotes and lines you come across as you read. If you post here, please get the quote word for word from the text, don't half-ass it from memory. So, to get us started...

"I count no day as lived unless I have loved a woman, slain a foeman, and eaten a fine meal...and the days that I have lived are as numberless as the stars in the sky."
-Daario Naharis

-p. 583, A Storm of Swords
-George R.R. Martin

"Kneel to the Lord Dragon, or you will be knelt."

Mazrim Taim to the Aes Sedai of the White Tower at the end of Lord of Chaos, book six of The Wheel of Time by Robert Jordan.

That quote stuck with me, and that book was just pure awesomeness. Before Jordan took a turn for the worse.

Light thinks it travels faster than anything but it is wrong. No matter how fast light travels, it finds the darkness has always got there first, and is waiting for it.
Reaper Man, Terry Pratchett
I am dying. Every day, with every breath I draw, I am closer to the end of my life. For we are born with a finite number of breaths, and each one I take edges the sunlight that is my life toward the inevitable dusk.

-Drizzt Do'Urden

Many that live deserve death, and some that die deserve life. Can you give it to them? Then do not be too eager to deal out death and judgement, for not even the very wise can see all ends.
Gandalf- JRR Tolkien, The Fellowship of the Ring

War is dark. Black as pitch. It is not a God. It does not laugh or weep. It rewards neither skill nor daring. It is not a trial of souls, not the measure of wills. Even less is it a tool, a means to some womanish end. It is merely the place where the iron bones of the earth meet the hollow bones of men and break them.
R Scott Bakker's 'The Darkness That Comes Before'

You can't find me because I'm lost in the music

I remember the first time I read that. Even though it's cliche line it seemed so profound when I read it.

"Never violate a woman, nor harm a child. Do not lie, cheat or steel.
These things are for lesser men.
Protect the weak against the evil strong.
And never allow thoughts of gain to lead you into the pursuit of evil.
Never back away from an enemy. Either fight or surrender.
It is not enough to say that I will not be evil. Evil must be fought where ever it is found."

This is the Iron Code of Druss the Legend. I haven't put a particular book because it appears in most of them. It should be noted that Druss adopted this code from Shadak the Hunter, first seen in the First Chronicles of Druss the Legend.
I want to die the way my dad died, peacefully in his sleep. Not screaming in terror like his passengers.

It is mentioned several times in the First Chronicles of Druss the Legend.

It would seem a silly thing to surrender to an evil force. They're evil. That's not going to be a pleasant stay.

Just a few of my favorites, for now...

"Dovie'andi se tovya sagain." - Mat

"Still 'round the corner, there may wait
A new road, or a secret gate,
And though I oft' have passed them by,
The day will come at last when I
Shall take the hidden paths that run
West of the moon, east of the sun" - Tolkien

"If you're not me, then who are you?" - Lews Therin, to Rand

PS - All mine are from memory, but I'm pretty sure they're word-perfect, though Xander's WoT quote was half-assed from memory. I knew it was, but I checked anyway. :p

"The Man in Black fled across the desert and the gunslinger followed"

- page 1, Gunslinger

i know it isn't exactly a quote from a person but that was the line that hooked me on fantasy books.

" On the whole, we're a murderous race.

According to Genesis, it took as few as four people to make the planet too crowded to stand, and the first murder was a fratricide. Genesis says that in a fit of jealous rage, the very first child born to mortal parents, Cain, snapped and popped the first metaphorical cap in another human being. The attack was a bloody, brutal, violent, reprehensible killing. Cain's brother Abel probably never saw it coming.

As I opened the door to my apartment, I was filled with a sense of empathic sympathy and intuitive understanding.

For freaking Cain."

-Harry Dresden From Dead Beat by Jim Butcher

and finally "It's a Dangerous business, frodo, going out your door"

-From Bilbo in lord of rings

One of the best:

Quote

When you're cruising down the road in the fast lane and you lazily sail past a few hard driving cars and are feeling pretty pleased with yourself and then accidentally change down from fourth to first instead of third thus making your engine leap out of your bonnet in a rather ugly mess, it tends to throw you off your stride in much the same way that this remark threw Ford Prefect off his.

"Piss on Hood!" ~Roach

I think it's acceptable if what you post is a memorable passage from a book, not an actual quote from a character.

hmm
Lot of my favourite quotes come from "Legacy of Kain"... they're not books, they're a series of games, but the story is the heart of those games and they have some awesome, best-written dialogue I've ever read

As for books, well...
right now al that comes to mind are a bunch of funny lines from MBotF
also this:

Quote

Merlin, even going to what he believed was paradise, thought of a backdoor out of it

This is from Lukyanenko's "Last Watch"....just happened to be very memorable line.

"How ever did these intellectually inept people get onto the Edinburgh Castle preservation committee?! I would never feel comfortable around them, especially that greasy ten year old who sits opposite; after some consideration, I shot him a venemous look that could sink the sturdiest of ships. He would suppose he possessed superior acumen after outwitting yours truly at the last meeting, but things could change especially when one is dead." - Genesis.

I have stolen princesses back from sleeping barrow kings. I burned down the town of Trebon. I have spent the night with Felurian and left with both my sanity and my life. I was expelled from the University at a younger age than most people are allowed in. I tread paths by moonlight that others fear to speak of during day. I have talked to Gods, loved women, and written songs that make the minstrels weep.

You may have heard of me

~Kvothe, name of the wind, patrick rothfuss

that sold the book for me, after reading the blurb i was unquestionally goin to hav to spend all the money at my disposal to buy it:p

Quite right. Druss ends up staying in a black hole in the ground for more than a year.

I like the "you never learn" conversation between Caladan Brood and Kallor. Can't remember quite how it goes now, but it's pretty cool. Anyone know it?

This one?

"For all that I seem to grate upon all of you, I have walked this land when the T'lan Imass were but children. I have commanded armies a hundred thousand strong. I have spread the fire of my wrath across entire continents, and sat alone upon tall thrones. Do you grasp the meaning of this?"
"Yes. You never learn, Kallor."

I've got a lot of favorite lines from Shardik and Heroes Die, but darned if I'm able to look 'em up.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"
―Gene Wolfe, The Citadel of the Autarch
