Best Male/female singing voice

Ok, no "these are my top ten picks" or "here are 3 people I think are great"
The BEST female and male singer In your opinion, based entirely on singing ability and not on the subject matter or style of the music
Male = Freddie Mercury. His voice just kicks ass and is super powerful. He was also in a pretty rad band and died too early IMO
Female = Mariah Carey. NOT because of her music, based purely on voice points. The bitch can hit like 4 octaves and if she'd been an opera singer instead of a psychotic pop star she'd probably be one of the most respected musicians around.

I think this is your gayest thread yet, beer party
Freddie Mercury is a good choice. I also have a thing for sting and phil collins vocals
I don't have any idea of who is the best because I don't go around thinking on these things.

YER gay.
umm...yeah.
Had this discussion a few nights ago. The above was agreed-upon by a few people actually.
and Sting = Phil collins = Mercury? Mercury is lightyears ahead of either of those two shrubs singing-wise.
although sting is half cool.

My favourite male voice at this moment is Ray LaMontagne.
Check out his version of "Crazy". Much better than the original.

Female, undeniably Lisa Hannigan. She's the one who used to sing with Damien Rice.

Poor quality on that last one, sorry.

Female: Melissa Kaplan (formerly of the now defunct Splashdown, now of Universal Hall Pass) - She has this unbelievable voice that can transcend. To this day she gives me chills.

(ignore the video, just listen to the track)
Male: Trent Reznor....effing hands down no contest!

I'd say Eva Cassidy for female voice...not sure about male voice at the moment.

I'm going to say Pavarotti on the male side, with honourable mentions to Frank Sinatra, Freddy Mercury and Fabio Lione.
As to female, Tarja Turrunen scores major point with her voice.

I tend to dislike vocal showoffs like Carey and Aguilera and their ilk... good voices singing shit tunes - it just makes me cringe. It's hard to argue with Freddie Mercury...he probably wins. Since I'm on a soul kick though...
Female: Aretha Franklin
Male: Otis Redding
Just in case some are unfamiliar with Redding: Try a Little Tenderness I've Been Loving You

Me. In the shower.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Male singing voice: at the moment I'd say it's Cee-Lo Green, who sings lead vocals with Gnarls Barclay; his live version of Crazy is awesome. Historically I'd have to plump for either Sam Cooke or Otis Redding. But people like Ijahman Levi, Denis Brown or Gregory Isaacs are up there.
Female singing voice: at present it would probably be Beth Gibbons, who sings vocals with Portishead, and who can do some truly extraordinary things with her phrasing and register, often within the same word. Historically it's much harder; Julie London, Peggy Lee, Ella Fitzgerald - all come to mind but I'd probably have to go for Aretha Franklin

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. I wish Cee-Lo would go back to rapping. His singing voice isn't that great - it works - but it's not spectacular like Dangermouse's beats. Anyone else notice that he sings awfully depressing lyrics for top 40 music?
Stevie Wonder has, by far, the best voice in recorded music. Expressive, expansive and hits you like a sledgehammer every single time.
This is Eddie Murphy and Stevie Wonder in the "Still Sucks" skit from SNL. Stevie is unbelievable: http://www.jibjab.com/view/145445

Aretha is hard to argue with. There's a couple Hindi playback singers that are absolutely ridiculous, but their work is primarily for movie scores and seems somewhat diminished in comparison to musicians working for themselves.

Male - Warrel Dane
Female - Anette Olzon.
Both of them can do amazing stuff with their voices.
