Kulp and Budin were burned bu the magical fire. Only Heboric protected by his tattos and Felisin(don't know why) weren't.
you might recall in fact that the KoD had a golden skin despite being a Malazan.

Baudin covers Felisin with his body and jumps over the rail.
They fell. The breath was knocked out of
them as they struck hard-packed sand. Out of the warren and back at Seven
Cities. Baudin says I am heavier. Something has changed. I could have sworn
that I was burning away to bones, yet I feel stronger.

I seem to recall that we get at least a partial explanation for why Hood chose Baudin. I think it's in House of Chains.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I don't think Baudin chose to become Knight of Death. He was chosen.

Did...did anyone say otherwise?

Grayjay asked why Baudin would have become a servant of a god given his general opinion of them. My answer is that his opinion wasn't relevant as he didn't get a choice.

Which isn't so uncommon. Lots of people didn't choose:
In fact we could say that those who chose(Kallor,Toc) are muc less than those who didn't.

Maybe his opinion changed as he stood at Hood's threshold? I wondered if maybe he thought that by becoming the Knight of Deathhe would have the opportunity to help Felisin again. Then Hood gave him memory wipe to make him more compliant.

Hes always been quite determined to survive. Perhaps he deemed it expedient to become the knight as to avoid dying, something he seems quite intent on doing.

My first instinct told me it was Baudin. I'm glad i was right lol... From what I remember about him, it sounds like becoming the KoD was the first choice he made from his heart as opposed to his head. Well, if he had any choice... I suppose that's still up to debate
