I seem to be one of the only GUYS who has read this book (I've got the second one in my to-read pile), and even though it is OVERLY mushy and sappy in the middle for about 3 chapters, the rest of it was actually really solid as a new style of vampire story.

Teaser looks good. Seems faithful to the book actually. I'll be seeing it.

Yeah, basically. It's HOW she approaches the vampires in her books that was fresh to me. Meyer gives them different reasons for being what they are, and far different stuff from Bram Stoker's version. Like they CAN go out during the day, but there is something about BRIGHT sunlight that makes it ostentatious to do so (which I won't spoil if anyone wants to read the books). Plus, it's nice to have good guy vamps like Buffy had.

Like i said, a little TOO much romance and mush in the middle for about 3 chapters, but beyond that it was pretty solid YA fare.

They're vampires? What?

Seriously, more and more series and films are completely screwing with the idea of vampires. Have any of you seen the new series Bloodties and moonlight? It getting to the point it's making me angry.

It's like Dragons, Dragons aren't supposed to be joly friendly horses, or benevolent powerfull creatures of magic that slumber and give knights magical swords, etc. Dragons are great, big, firebreathing lizards. They're predators and ravagers, that kill people, a lot of them. They set fields a fire, they eat human flesh, they don't act remotly sympathetic to stuff that tastes good.

Vampires aren't supposed to walk around at day. They're not supposed to make friends and drink tea with you. They're not supposed to live like normal people, watching televison and keeping a job. Drinking cups of blood from the refrigerator. They're predators of the night. They're otherwordly, caught between life and death. THEY'RE SUPPOSED TO BE SCARY AND UGLY AND MONSTROUS, GODDAMNIT!!!

It probably started before, but I blame people emulating Anne Rice. Her stories were interesting and different but spooky. Her vampires are super powerfull, super intelligent creatures that turns more and more freaky with age, yes, there's way too much gay on gay porn and bisexual vibes going on in the books, but it was good.

Not this crappy, "I'm a seventeen year old vampire, let me take you flying in the sunlight" and shit...

Well I think Ann Rice's Son turned out gay...so she supported him (how that works with her knew found faith I dont know)

The first couple of Vampire chronicles were great...
other than that I have yet to read any good vamp books... aside from the few you seen in some Fantasy novels and Dresden.

Are there any out there?

Read the book.

I was blown away at the level of awesome a story more than a hundred years old can contain. Of course it has parts of it where you get a bit uninterested but it's actually a very good story, well told, the dialogue is old and has a certain charm and of course Dracula is sweet.

I actually think you'll like the book more if you've seen the movie first.

I can also recommend reading Frankenstein and Dr. Jekyl and Mr. Hyde. They're so very different than the way that the story is portrayed today.

Looks like soap-teen-opera-action movie :)
But probably worth watching it ;) just to see something positive and optimistic for a change.

Yeah, but that's just a vampire who's in a book. It's not a vampire book ;)

This just comes across as you complaining about the fact that not everyone shares your view of fictional creatures. If you don't like it, don't watch it.

It looks kind of shite to me any way.

Plus what you say about Dragons is pure pap. Different cultures have plenty of different interpretations of good vs evil dragons or intelligent vs animalistic dragons.

Now get back in your longboat and think more carefully about what you post or I'll steal your wheelchair.;)

Cougar, I don't have time to consider other people's useless opinions of dragons and vampires when I am obviously so very right and they are so very wrong. Allthough I have to say I liked the chinese dragons in D-war, silly but awesome ;)

It's not that they're fictional creatures, rather that they are mythical/legendary creatures part of many cultures folklore and Hollywood is just taking a dump all over what originally made them great.

Dragons and vampires are supposed to be monsters, scary and terrifying. When I was a kid, I was afraid of vampires, now a days children probably wish they knew one so they could go fight crime and take magical rides in the forest with pedowamp.

Bah.

In fairness, I think Apt has a point about dragons. They're based on an ideal of predatory creatures, in the vast majority, so if they were nice and friendly, why would they possibly have evolved toast-making breath and big scary claws?;)

Vampires though, he doesn't have a leg to stand on, although I can't stand Anne Rice books. Thankfully I'm not the intended audience though.

Apt - if you cling onto cliche so desperately, how do you enjoy Erikson?

See that's the thing. When everybody brakes the traditional image, the cliche stops being a cliche and actually stands out as being something special of its own.

I can't actually remember reading a book where a dragon was just a dragon and not either some ancient beast of infinite knowledge or powerfull magical mule... War of the Flowes might a good example though.
