In BH Apsalar is walking in Shadow warren when she see an image of a ship
in a different realm. She approaches the ship and a rope, thick as her wrist,
comes down. The ship is anchored in the ground. Apsalar climbs quite
a distance boards, the ship and meets Paran. They chat and Paran invites her
to his cabin where he is setting up brunch in Wu. Apsalar, "you have gained some power". She goes to the cabin where Paran is hazy and indistinct. He advises her to leave Shadow warren. She does and Paran appears normal.
Note: no water under the ship; Paran does not help Apsalar with her climb or
her boarding of the ship. Implies a projection of some sort. Yet, the rope and
the ship are solid implying reality. Oh, well. My question:
What would happen to Paran-Wu if Apsalar killed Paran-Shadow?

1. The link would break and Apsalar falls to the ground.
2. Paran-Shadow dies, but Paran-Wu in unaffected. Paran-Wu says that was
unkind, breaks the link and Apsalar falls to the ground.
3. Paran-Shadow dies, and, in reaction, Paran-Wu passes out. The link is
broken and Apsalar falls to the ground.
4. Para-Wu dies, the link is broken...
5. Something else would happen

If 4 is likely, would this mean that a Deragoth who killed its Shadow Hound is
comminting suicide? Looking forward to your responses as to the actual realationship between the original and the projection. To what extent is the
projection in harm's way?

uhmm.. the warrens are complicated
Paran is special, being all ascendant-like, he projects himself into other warrens--may have something to do with that Hound blood..

I doubt the Degaroth/Hound part--supposedly that's what happened to the Hounds Paran freed, and yet the Degaroth were alive and well untll they encountered Karsa...
The problem with the gene pool is that there's no lifeguard

hmm i have to agree with kud and say that this is parans master-of-the-deck-i'll-do-whatever-the-fnck-i-want-too dealy screwing with the rules. as to what would have happened should shadow paran die? well paran would die. but even with apsalar in a warren and under a league of water he knew she was there, so i don't think she could have slipped much by him.
There's a fine line between genius and insanity. I have erased this line.

I don't remember the passage, but my impression was that Paran wasn't split up. Apsalar was doing "fast travel" over wu by using shadow. The place where she meets Paran is an ocean on Wu but just... was it a forest? or a plain? in the shadow realm. A memory of a past time on wu, or perhaps just something different that wanders.

When she climbs up she's seeing Paran through the shadow fragment that overlaps "reality" in wu. Paran isn't in shadow, he's still on Wu, he's just aware of the fragments passing and Apsalars presence.

On the question of the hounds and the deragoth. We still don't know their connection, so contemplating death or absorbtion or what ever is pointless.

Apt's got it, I think.
The boat wasn't in shadow - it was just that overlap thing that you get in shadow. Paran was possibly using a magic sending to tell Apsalar who it was, and ask her to enter his cabin.

And it was a forest, IIRC.

Well we know from Apt and her one eyed familiar that shadow touches all Warrens.
I got the impression from that passage that Paran Sensed her coming and so made it possible for her to join him.
As others have said above, he is the Master of the Deck and can probably easily be in two places at once through the formation of such an instance in his mind.
So when Apsalar was mincing along quite happily in the part of Shadow that touches Wu at that point and sees the rope i can understand how the rope then leads her through that warren into the place of Parans choosing as it were.
I know what i mean.
Good thread though.

"I think i was a bad person before. Before this time. I do not try to be good now but i am not bad. Perhaps if i try harder i may get a better hand dealt next time? But surely that makes it pointless? Perhaps i am good. Just good at being pointless. But that would make me bad. Bad at having a point. Ah…. I see now. I was nothing before, I am nothing now. I am bad purely because im pointless. "

Apsalar stood facing the sea. On the other side of the A'rath Strait stood
the Kansu Reach and the road leading to the port city of Kansu. A lone sail
from a trader's ship was cutting a path Southward into the The Ehrlitan Sea.
Apsalar intends to cross the Strait using the Shadow warren. Apsalar, "the
warren feels strong here." A moment's concentration and Apsalar is in the Shadow warren. The land is now forest, very old forest where dragons once
fought. A darkness ahead, something reaching down from the canopy, straight and thin. A rope, thick as her wrist. And resting on the needle strewn
floor an anchor. "This is, I think, an invitation. Just as I sensed a presense so it in turn sensed me."
The rest is cut and dried. Apsalar climbs up the rope, talks to Paran, who invites her to brunch in his cabin. As Paran closes the cabin door behind Apsalar he begins to fade. Apsalar notes another presense in the cabin: Paran
vague and indistinct. He suggest she release Shadow warren. She does and
they are back on the sea in Wu. Paran had created a portal of his cabin from
Wu to Shadow warren.

My whole original thread is moot. Never happened. Shit!
