i doubt that his grip on the empire is anywhere near solid. like mentioned above, Laseen schooled ST himself. Allthough the decision of taking the Wickan Plains in BH may not have been hers, it seems like something Rel or Dom would come up with.

no, I'm fairly certasin that was Mallick rel--the one who had subverted the claw and actually made Laseen do what the wants

There were several discussions of the Wickan crusade, most of the factors would suggest that the 'crusaders" are doomed--we have no clue how many more Wickan clans there are, aside from the 3 that went with COltaine, add to that the lack of good commanders for the Malazans, plus once word gets out of what went down in Malaz City, the veterans in the crusade may turn back--since it's not an official Empire campaign and all....

So there's nothing smart about Dom--he's a butcher, he lacks good strategy/tactics, he has no skills in politics, etc...

He was training the Whirlwind army in Malazan tactics, so as to level the playing field. Maybe not a stroke of genius, but it's something.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

(I am being absolutely merciless here :D)
Sha'ik was training the army--Leoman quotes Kellanved, and we are told that Shai'ik compiled a library of Malazan tactical advice in her oasis

The Dogslayers kept separately from the rest of the Apocalypse's forces--and they were traitorous Malazans to begin with, meaning they got their training prior to the rebellion as part of Malazan regular troops.

Korbolo Dom himself did not train anyone :D

Yeah. Dom is just a fly-blown Napan sunofabitch traitor who I hope ends up with Sirryn Kanar. His crimes include-

*Btraying the Empire
*Executing half of his legion
*Killing unarmed civilians.
*Murdering Coltaine and the 7th
*Crucifying 10,000 soldiers!
*Planning YET ANOTHER double cross!
*Pretending to be a "hero of the empire".
*Being a mofo.

Anything else? :D

The one part I like about him is how he's still alive, even though you convinced yourself books ago that he'd be getting what he deserved....any....time now...yet he's still there...drives me nuts but draws me to his character.

He's an overachiever :D

I despise Dom, hes part of the reason coltaines memory is being tarnished and twisted. He needs to die, painfully, alongside the jhistal.
Carrying on from the initial discussion of assassins fatal occupation, somebody painted pearls death as tragic. I nearly choked on my juice at that, tragic? he was a hateful cowardly shit, filthy underhand tactics to bring kalam down. Man up and face him you coward, he got his dues when apsalar nailed him with his own bolt. I know lostra was next door but I felt his blinkered vision, stupidity and ambition drove him to a deservedly painful end.

I don't mind Pearl so much in MoI. I just got to the part where he made the nice gesture to Olar Something (not Ethil; the T'lan Imass who was destroyed while killing L'oric's familiar) by placing his head on a ledge with a nice view.

Pearl could be a butt at times, defintely, but he could also be charming sometimes. Though he deserved what he got in the end, like most of SE's "bad guys" he's really not bad bad.

What Korbolo Dom did was terrible. By having the lsoing side worhip Coltaine, the chain of dogs felt cheated as if they had stolen his legacy. (a very good tactic i might add(but not enough to become a tactical genius ie. Dujek, WhiskeyJack, Coltaine, Kellenved))

On the topic of Kalam and ascension, I find Fiddler's little game of DoD near the end of BH interesting. Kalam gets Obelisk, the Sleeping Goddess - fitting for someone stuck in an Azath, isn't it - but he also gets Herald of High House Death, "distinctly inactive," and the Azath he's in is the Deadhouse. Is Kalam being drafted by Hood?

Then again, another sentence from that game wouls seem to speak against that: "'So how does Kalam get from Herald Death to Obelisk? Let's see. Ah, King of High House Shadows!'" This would suggest that ST saved Kalam from death by putting him in the Deadhouse - but Kalam did get the Obelisk card first...

That would suggest to me that ST isn't quite done with Kalam. He does mention that his 'collection is growing quite nicely' so I would assume that he still intends to use Kalam.

QUOTE (Stalker @ Jan 23 2009, 01:09 PM) <{POST_SNAPBACK}>
So last night I was walking downtown for some pizza at like 1am with some friends of mine,
and someone said, "I'm so hungry I could eat a whole pizza."

I said, "I bet I could eat 100 pizzas," and no one understood me. I was sad.

SE would never be done with kalam. but what you say about kalam's being drafted by hood is kinda obvious. the claw was fashioned after Cotillion who could probably be called their patron god

I read this part recently and it's a great quote.

It difinitivly proves Kalam is not dead in my opinon. Especially seeing as all the other stuff Fid sees is true or comes true.

I don't think you should put any stock in the reading connecting kalam with any house, power or ascendant. Rather the reading forsees the events. Kalam is mortally wounded hence the Herald of death card (they serve as reapers as we see in the KB&B books). King of shadow because it's ST that carries Kalam to the Azath. Finally Obelisk because Azath is connected to Obelisk and the unalligned also seems to be connected to sleep/dream and is dormant on 7Cs. It doesn't necesarilly mean that Kalam now serves any of these powers or that they hold sway on him.

and it doesn't. but that doesn't neccesarily mean he can't lean (jsut a little bit tho) to one side or another
no matter what kalam or any others would like to think, you could still be being used by an ascendant without their knowledge. and in some cases, like quick ben in RG, you could be being used, know about it, and still be helpless.

of course you can.
but if you're a major player like Kalam, there's always a risk that once you find out you've been used you'll go ape-shit all over those who used you...
I don't htink any major power would want Kalam Mekhar as an official "enemy"
