I loved Gruntle from MoI was easily my fav character just wanting to know is he dead. I know Toc mentioned him in RG im hoping somehow he is still alive...as this is my first post I just wanted to know is there a way to see what has previously been discussed in Threads without looking through all of them... Thanks

Go to the forum front page and press search, there you can make specialised searches.

Gruntle hasn't appeared since MoI. Last we know he was in Black Coral, planning on becoming a guard captain again.

I just re-read the end of MoI and there is no mention of him becoming a caravan guard again. The last thing said about him is that he is expecting a drink from Anaster/Toc, and that they are calling Anaster Mortal Sword too. Then as we know in RG the Grey Swords are slaughtered (Pg 282). Do you think that Gruntle remained with the grey swords or went of with Stonny to become a caravan guard again...i wish erikson wouldnt leave so many things open. This has been bothering me since MoI first came out (a long time ago) and to get a mention of Gruntle in RG made my day.....very sad i know

I would love to see him again
Actually in the scene where Toc mentions him along with Paran, Tool, and Tattersail i just thought that anything standing in the way of those guys would be deader than the 2 Hounds Karsa killed.
Its like a Lady Envy, Tool, the 3 Seguleh, and Envy s hound and the Ay that had Toggs mates soul scene

I don't believe Gruntle was killed with the rest of the Grey Swords... SE would've mentioned so.
All we can hope is that Gruntle became a caravan guard again instead of the soldier he became... he always did hate the soldier-life anyways.

I'm also hoping we'll see Gruntle re-appear later on though... if Toc and Gruntle would come together again... man, that would be a giant laugh :D
ah well, we'll see what the future brings us :D

I'm pretty sure we'll see Gruntle and Stonny again in TTH. I'm pretty sure they aren't dead, and I'm sure whatever their circumstances will be elucidated in TTH from what Mal has told me.

Don't worry about it :D

If you've read RP...
My guess is that Toc the Younger has made his last stand, though he does seem to have a nack for resurrection, so...maybe he'll come back in the body of Redmask, only to find he's half the man he used to be. :p

Gruntle wasn't one of the Grey Swords, he had his own legion, Trake's Legion, to worry about. Though it was mauled pretty badly at Black Coral, it is far from dead. He has probably been recruiting and building Trake's legion back up to strangth and we'll proabably see him on Genebackis in TtH or at the final conflict(s) in DoD/tCG.

I kinda love it when D'rek unleashes her nerd wrath, as I knew she would here. Sorry innocent bystanders, but someone's gotta be the kindling.

sigh
Gruntle had 8 women left of his legion, MoI, pg 1114
later, pg 1144:

Quote

And no more titles or honorifics. Name's Gruntle. I'm a caravan guard, currently unemployed"
"Sir, you are the Mortal Sword of Trake"
his eyes narrowed on her
Her gaze flicked away, down to the killing field. "A title purchased in blood, sir"
Gruntle winced, looked away and was silent for a long while. Then he nodded. "All rithg. But I'm not a soldier. I hate war.I hate killing. And I never want to see another battlefield ever again

then later on, he tosses Treach's torks onto Itkovian's mound...pg 1161

So, I expect Gruntle's been out of action for a while, and likewise I expect him to get back into it forsome odd reason in TtH...

:D Sweet drawing and it's like... completely how I imagines Gruntle to look like (only with a few more stripes on his arms) :D

He probably took his still-living soldiers and became a bigger caravan guard... Trake will use them again when Trake seems it fit.

The torchs Gruntle threw away on the grave of Itko have nothing to do with Gruntle's later occupation I think...

Trake's still in the fight against the CG - to the point that it seems Krul manipulated events to ensure tiger-guy ascended to godhood when Fener was chopped (pun intended).

So fair bet we'll see Gruntle and his Legion again in some capacity.

Heboric had a brief stint as Trake's Destriant, and/or Shield Anvil (post humously), but we haven't seen anyone else in those positions, so one or the other is likely to pop up.

Plus the theory that Heboric is now back and in Chaur's body, which would mean Trake had 2 aspected mortals in play.

It's interesting that of the various MS/Destriant/SA individuals we've seen Trake's have been the most creative with their powers. Gruntle assembled his legion and did the tiger thing, and Heboric manifested those ghost hands/claws ( keeping in mind the jade chunk and otataral influences at work there).

Which brings up yet another point... Heboric, as Trake's shiny new Destriant, was tainted by the Jade Chunks and Otataral... given the link between god and invested human, i wonder whether that had a backlash effect of some sort.

Anyrate, Gruntle's stomping grounds were Genabackis, so decent odds we'll see him again in TtH.

- Abyss, notes the whole tigermorph thing was too utterly cool to not use ever again in the books...

heboric had the hands from Jade... Treach gave him super sight, stealth of movement and regeneration, I believe... don't remeber if he ddi nything tmore to his hands, but I'm assuming that with extra speed, and hands made of stoe he could do without them beins re-shaped to claws...
