In DG (obviously), when Mallick Rel is delivering Pormqual's orders to Coltaine, he refers to him as HF Coltaine. Is that a typo or not?

Why would it be?

Coltaine was sent in, as an unproven military commander, to secure the empires hold on 7Cs .

But we know that Coltaine's title was Fist and not High Fist wich was Pormqual' s title. So or this is a print error or... I dont Know. Any ideas?

It's probably just a mistake. Pormqual was the High Fist of Seven Cities, Coltaine was only Fist to the Seventh Army.

Fists command armies, but a High Fist is the military governor of a territory and supreme leader of its armies.

It's a close link to the real world, I suppose. Dujek's position in Genebackis is just like Eisenhower as Supreme Commander in Europe.

Could just be the way it's said. Just like Lt-Colonels are called just 'Colonel' or a Brigadier-General is just called 'General', High Fist could be commonly just called 'Fist'. Unless there's a solid example of Coltaine called Fist that isn't in dialogue or someone's personal thoughts.

At the start of DG Coltaine is referred to as "Fist" dozens of times, and is welcomed as such by Duiker and others. In the same part of the book Pormqual is also frequently mentioned, and every single time he is referred to as "High Fist." Unless it's just a huge coincidence, I think Coltaine is just a Fist.

Yeah your right Dunsparrow, Coltaine is only a fist.

When Coltaine strips Sulmar of his rank he protests and states that his Imperial commission was granted by a High Fist, and therefore coltaine doesn't have the power to demote him. The following Conversation between Bult and Dukier say's that the nearest High Fist is in Aren.

I don't think it was a mis print either, i like to think that Rel was just tryin to suck up to coltaine by adding the High in front of Fist.

Either way, Coltaine proved himself to be a competent commander. If he'd been the High Fist of the Imperial Armies in SC, well, hell, but I think that he'd ended the rebellion very quickly. I mean, lets face it, he was in a nightmarish position, an outright impossible mission. And he managed it. Imagine if he had the double of the forces he had.

Sormo makes a comment along these lines - that if there had been three Malazan armies instead of three-fifths of one, the rebellion would have been utterly crushed, and Seven Cities would have been quiscient for generations to come.

Personally, I think that if the Seventh alone had been intact, with a decent mage cadre, and a fleet providing occasional logistics, they could have thoroughly raped the rebellion from one end of Seven Cities to the other.

In response to Ike taking over supreme command, the British softened the blow to General Montgomery's pride -- previous supreme commander -- by premoting him up to field mashal.

On the issue at hand, I think that Coltaine was a fist but he is spoke of as high fist twice in the book. Could be a typing error, or the person whose view we were reading could of been wrong.
In the cast list at the start of the book he is Fist Coltaine.

Not to mention adequate supplies, no refugees to protect, yes mages, Moranth munitions, more officers.... the list is endless.

Part of Coltaine's success was due to the fact that he was conducting a campaign, and not a panicked flight, as Duiker said.

don't underestimate Moranth Munitions. Nowadays their perfectly moot. but over there...

cussers sharpers and flamers...sounds familiar...Let's see: stick grenades, frag grenades and phophorous grenades. To bad we still can't shoot them off the end of a crossbow though...Damn.

Yes they could... but that would be boring:)
Kif: Sir, remember your course correction?
Captain Zapp: No.
Kif: Well, it's proving somewhat more suicidal than we'd initially hoped.

I say it's another DGism. There's plenty, they just don't get the same press as the more popular and flashy GotMisms.

Unless he is the High Fist of the Wickan Plains (since they've been conquered, someone has to be in charge for the Empire), but outside of that territory he loses that authority, and in regards to the present campaign is referred to and treated as a Fist, as he is acting like a general and not a governor?
