Are you able to call places that sell them? A phone conversation with a sales person - provided that you don't get upsold top much - may solve quite a few problems.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Are Roombas or whatever they are called good investments or a waste of time/annoying as fuck?

Having hard floors vs carpet is quite a difference. I could vacuum no problem but now the work is double as I have to sweep and mop.

Look up the Bissell Crosswave. My folks have one and it works WAY better than I expected. It cleans real well and covers both sweeping and mopping.

Any of you have any experience with wireless (wifi) doorbells?

Our current (dumb) wireless doorbell is somehow on the same bandwidth as two other doorbells (from different brands) close to us so when someone presses one of the doorbells the other two receivers also get the signal and ring too. There is no possibility to switch bandwidth according to the manual and google so that's out.

I have been looking into the smart doorbells for some time already and have seen different model and makes come by with their pro's and cons.

Currently I can't choose and would value your advice

In general what I am looking for:

-Battery operated since there is no special electrical cord for doorbells in our hallway nor is there a powersocket there
-No online subscriptions (Like with the Ring Video Doorbell), just store the feed on a local NAS

Yes, and you don't need a 'smart' doorbell, you just need a better dumb one.
Get one that lets you change the frequency because the shared signal thing is very VERY common.
Also, batteries die. You won't know til you miss a delivery. Get one with a bell you can plug in that has serious volume options, and stick it in an unusued socket somewhere you will still hear it.

...about the batteries die, this goes for the button unit too so get a decent battery and check it every so often.

Also, there are various ones at various price points and the upsells... bluetooth, web links, camera, seriously jack the price. You know whether you need these or don't, but i do recommend the one with the capture-tentacles that can be set to grab anyone who tries to steal your packages. Sure, it costs more, but it's worth it the first time you come home and find a would-be thief all wrapped up in cables on your doorstep. I don't recommend the ones with the fatality settings tho. Bodies are such a pain to dispose of and the fluids can seep through amazon packaging.

Just get a cheap tablet and download Calibre and an app for messing around with the light properties on the tablet. Problem solvered.

I have a Kindle Paperwhite at the moment which is 8 years old now, while I love it it has been having some issues for about a year now (it sometimes takes almost a minute until the unlock screen appears after pressing the button) so I already was thinking of what Tsundoku says.

Last November I have replaced my 7 inch Google Nexus 7 (Asus 2013 model) with a 10.4 inch Samsung Galaxy Tab A7 (2020 model) during a pre-Black Friday sale, so when I can get myself to thoroughly go through the Nexus 7 to get all the important stuff from it I'll factory reset it and install the Kindle and Calibre app

My grandfather, my mom and my mother in law all use their tablets as E-reader for a while already.

I used to love my kindle but I've discovered that it's actually just as convenient to read on my phone and a phone is much less cumbersome.

I'm a Kindle Paperwhite guy. It's been nothing but a blissful device. Probably about 6 years old now? No issues, love it.

A lot of e-readers are black and white only though, including how they display book covers. I know the Kindle Fire (which is an e-reader/simple tablet combo) does full color, but a lot of e-readers don't (or have some models available that do and some that don't) so you're going to want to make sure what you're getting, if you care about that.
They came with white hands and left with red hands.

Nah, once you make the leap you'll be fine. It's a mild adjustment but a TONNE of convenience no matter what you choose.

I tried.. Walmart did not carry any so I ll have to try Best Buy one day when I go in town. Probably do a Fire for color.

I would advise against the Fire, it's not e-ink so you may as well be reading on your phone/tablet/computer on the Kindle App if your'e headed that route, and the glare might bother you.

Here's a good recent article about that:

https://www.toptenre...s-right-for-you

If you're only need for the colour is the covers....you'll get used to the B&W on e-ink screens and they are easy on your eyes...and the backlight/glow on the paper white is unobtrusive and super intuitive (like I'll have it on the subway and underground it glows a bit for me, and when we are out in the sunlight it doesn't).

I need a laptop for my daughter going to college and one for myself to control our home stuff and I’m so far off my game when it comes to this stuff now that YouTube recos are going over my head with tech jargon. I’m lost.

I love my very old 3rd (I think) gen Kindle e-ink. Still going strong but I've had it for probably a decade now. The battery isn't what it was but it still lasts a good while. Would like an upgrade (love the paperwhites) but I'm not sure about backlit, does this effect glare? For my one I got a cover with a built in light which is great in the dark and I can also read it in the sun.

I take this is all still possible with the newer versions?

I have the 2018 Kindle Paperwhite and it's amazing. Yep, you can read it in all lights, no glare whatsoever on the e-ink screen, and I don't even bother with a case or cover. In the sun it just looks normal, and then when. it's in the dark or darker spots, it faintly glows...Like I'll be on the bus and in the bight sun I can read and when we go through a tunnel and it's dark, I can still read and there transition is like nothing.

I had the previous Paperwhite before that and it was great, but got wet in the rain once and it made it less stellar (water damage fucked with the backlight a little)...the good news is that every Paperwhite after the 2018 is waterproof, so no worries on that front.

Oh and once you go without the little page tab buttons the old Kindle used to have, you'll wonder why you ever bothered. So much easier to swipe on the actual screen.

I think I have a Lenovo Flex or something like that, and it works pretty good, so I imagine a Yoga is on par. I'm not really a computer specs person, but for a college student I imagine going 'decent' on space and RAM, rather than top-of-the-line, will be good enough and reduce cost.
