If it helps, both ogre and spear guy can be backstabbed for their first health bar. When you run up the steps to the ogre, run round the corner and kill spear guy.

Ogre will break free while you do this... run back down steps and hide. If you get far enough away, ogre plods onto steps and stays there. Go into stealth mode, sneak up past him on the left. Backstabby!

Then unavoidable fight for next bar. Keep holding down o to dash run out of the way, and hit him when you can. Fire helps - the flame vent stuns him for a moment so you can get some hits in.

That grab move is awful. He threw me into the ravine at one point.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

Considering investing in this game but I'm worried about this dragon rot stuff. How punishing is it? If I die a handful of times will NPCs die? Will I miss out on content?

It's really not a problem so far. Nothing like Demons Souls where you came back with half health after dying.

Basically, after you die a number of times (You get a chance to resurrect up to twice if you get killed) you get a message telling you that a person somewhere in the world has got dragon rot.

I got about 3 infected just trying to beat the ogre. But there's a cure, and once I got it I held onto it until I'd beaten another 2 bosses, and infected at least one other person. But then I cured them all in one go. I think it's there to make you aware of just how many times you might be dying; it does add pressure to get it right faster, but it hasn't ruined anything.

Yet.

But what happens to the NPCs? Do they get incapacitated? Like would a vendor or quest giver go inactive.

And this cure, is it something you can just buy/ craft once you've squired it or is it something prohibitably expensive or hard to come by?

It affects any questlines the npcs may have.

It also has an effect on the unseen aid you receive when you die - usually the chance of receiving aid is about 30%, but it halves when you get a rot essence (when an npc gets infected) and reduces further when more get infected. The aid is a chance to lose less experience and coins when you die - unseen aid often kicks in, meaning you lose less... but when the chance is reduced, you get less of a chance and you lose more exp and money when you die.

The cure is a blood drop, taken from an infected person, and used at an idol. I think you can buy them after you get the first one, I haven't got that far yet.

Yeah I've only spoken to a few people - the traders coughed at me but still sold me stuff.

Nice one! 4th bead just around the corner, bit of a different fight though.

That was cool, put it on for a bit to show my boy; he gave me helpful suggestions while I got bashed by the blazing bull, and it was very satisfying defeating it with him watching. Then went back to the estate, and took on and beat the big drunk dude. Managed it without my companion getting killed too.

Looking forward to next boss as these last two mini ones were fun but didn't take long, or more than two or three attempts.

I'll be back to cursing it all again shortly ive no doubt.

So far Ive only invested in the mikiri counter, the whirlwind one, the one after that gives you more emblems, and suppress presence.

Got 9 skill points now - I guess I'll get lightbringer, but I'm still holding out for another text to get a new skill tree.

You can pretty much run through that gap to the lake, round the building, and they stop following at the lake.

I took everyone out first, then backstabbed fatty once, then ran to get the help so he wasn't wasted on the minions. While he's busy i just kept hitting him.

Lady Butterfly is something else. Got her to second phase but her health bar gets even bigger. Will try again later.

For Lady Butterfly if you have nightjar slash you can cheese her as it stunlocks her. For the first phase she never recovered enough, on the second phase she got out of it few times but that's how I beat her. It was still before I started to use blocking and deflecting in fights.
Now I'm fighting master shinobi, should be through most of the game. Have accumulated 7 bead necklaces and upgraded my damage 6 times.
Don't know if I try to beat the boss this evening or farm some skill points before. Have some mobs available that give 686 skill exp, tho my next points cost also goes to 7000-8000 range.

Despite my better judgement I just downloaded Sekiro. I was sort of saving the money for a PS4 copy of My time at Portia but I really do want to get into a From Soft game and beat it.

Very nervous about that counter system but here goes nothing... Besides a lot of money.

Edit: I'm surprised it's a 10GB download. I guess the textures will still look like a PS2 game.

Just bought the slide. What a let down. You barely move imo. Not sure how much I ll be able to take advantage of. I suck with judgment on distance in this game. Even after hour upon hour of repeating Hirata bits I can’t get axe on 1 hit most times.

Are you missing because you're doing the action too early or because you're pointing the wrong ways?

Not tried Nightjar slash. It's difficult to know what will be actually useful on the skill trees. The Mikiri counter upgrade would be good, I've been using that loads.

Last night I was stunning her briefly with firecrackers, but I don't think that's really their best use! They still let me get some hits in, even whirlwind slash knocked her about a bit. Could use a special that does more posture damage really.

Usually to early. I hit the ground right before their feet. Sometimes I do it to late and get countered completely.

Try fighting an easy opponent a bunch and focus on correctly closing that distance for the opening move over and over again. You're pulling the trigger too early, then overcompensating too much in the delay - probably bc you're worried about getting messed up if it goes wrong. Let's lower the stakes a little while keeping them higher than the training ground.

We want you to both get better at the first attack and realize that you can recover better even when you do mess it up. Being able to quickly start a recovery from a mess up is really cool because being human and playing a tough game, you'll mess up over and over again.

I get how it's frustrating to get punished for the bad attacks though.

Get the key from him or you'll have to come back later.

Damn but I really have to quit, I've got work tomorrow. I don't know what's worse, leaving it knowing I didn't beat her, or knowing that I got about two strikes away from doing so. I had a near perfect first phase at one point; she couldn't touch me. Then got into second, she summoned, and when she did her leap - I ran out off shuriken... just at the wrong moment.

Got her moves now, just a matter of getting through that second phase.

Ching ching ching sidestep sidestep ching ching ching shuriken slash slash sidestep sidestep...

love the cadence of this, I was almost in auto pilot just moving to the sword clash sounds.

Nightjar slash is good but she can get out of it. Shuriken is great for knocking her out of the air - just bad luck if they run out and you don't notice. I need some more snap seeds; just for one use, right at the end in case she manages a summon. You can dodge but it's way easier to snapseed and keep hitting her.

I don't know why, it feels like it should be an easy boss, but that burning bull keeps getting the better of me.

It did to me - I kept chasing it, trying to hit it on the turn, it just kept hitting me.

I eventually got it by standing still next to it after using firecrackers, and continued hitting it without stopping - seemed to stunlock it until I killed it.

Oh, actually I remember - hit it in the head with the charged stab. Make it rear with firecrackers, when it comes down, wind up a charged stab and hit its head - that's what stuns it so you can keep hitting it.
