Hey guys,

I wanted some feedback on a new good series to start reading and couldn't think of a better place to get good advice than right here.

I'm looking to start a new Fantasy book series and was wondering if you guys had some suggestions as there are so many series out there, I'd like to start with some really good ones and ones that are my "type".

Here's a quick list of my favorite fantasy series to date:

-Everything Malazan (obviously)
-Everything Brandon Sanderson
-Wheel of Time
-King Killer Chronicles

I like my fantasy series to be long in length, not a fan of stand alone books, and have some type of magic system.

Any suggestions?

Thanks in advance!

Some of those Sanderson stand alone novels were excellent ^^

I quite like any of Conn Iggulden's series, the books on Rome or the Mongols are amazing.

Something smaller but there are quite a few related books to it would be Anne Bishop's Black Jewel's series and novels.

Trudi Canavan's Black Magician Trilogy and novels are goooood.

Peter V Brett's Demon Cycle is great so far too.

The hell they are.

The Black Magician trilogy is awful. It's Harry Potter for teenagers with none of the charm, worldbuilding, character strength or skill. The story is terribly generic to start with and towards the end of the series simply turns into shit. I still feel bad for paying for that.

Joe Abercrombie
Jim Butcher

Edited to say, I am just going to follow Apt around and write, "agreed" after all of his statements today. :harhar: Black Magician trilogy was awful and The Demon Cycle was worse.

Er, Really?

...

I will 2nd anything by Butcher or Abercrombie. Also anything by Richard Morgan or Mark Lawrence - The Broken Empire trilogy.

Or if you can find them... Matthew 'fucking' Stover and the Acts of Caine series!

The Black Company series by Glen Cook is quite a bit in the Malazan vein, though a bit smaller in scape. But it's long - nine books.

Also, second/third/whatever the sentiment re Trudi Canavan - the hell?!
Puck was not birthed, she was cleaved from a lava flow and shaped by a fierce god's hands. - [worry]
Ninja Puck, Ninja Puck, really doesn't give a fuck..? - [King Lear]

If you enjoyed the more introspective side of Erikson (e.g. if you, like me, really liked Toll the Hounds) and you don't mind a bit of nihilism, I recommend Bakker's Prince of Nothing & Aspect Emperor series. Very marmite I admit.

Let me see..
Bakker - Prince of Nothing
Lawrence - Broken Empire (love it)
Everything by Jim Butcher
Glen Cook - Black Company
Adrian Tchikovsky - Shadows of the Apt.

Hmm, how about Gemmel's Rigante series? It's no Wheel of Time - only four books - but I frankly thought it was really good. Maybe the magic system isn't anything over-the-top like fireball-hurling sorcerers and so forth, but there's a fair amount of fate and destiny in it, plus a race of god-like beings messing around with mortal lives.
Not strictly the droids you are looking for, but Paul Kearney's Macht trilogy is worth a look should you enjoy Black Company. Magic is really low-key, though, almost nonexistent, except for that black armour thing.

You guys are awesome. Thank you for the feedback.

I need to finish up the first two books of Stormlight Archives and then I think Im going to go with either:

The Broken Empire Series or Codex of Alera by Jim Butcher.

I've heard amazing things about the Dresden Files, they take place in a modern world tho right? At the moment I'm in the mood for more "Medieval Fantasy", so I think with Butcher ill start with the Codex of Alera.

Dresden. Do it. Trust me you won't be sorry. Urban fantasy is not my thing, either. Dresden is candy covered crack for your brain.

Hi, I am reading at the moment Stephen Deas - The Black Mausoleum. So far it is not a very long series and don't know if it will be, but it is dark and brutal. This book in particular is my favourite. It has 6 previous books that you should read to get all the info for the series so far and I think his latest one just came out. Dragon Queen.
I have also enjoyed the Eisenhorn and Ravenor trilogies by Dan Abnett. They are Science Fiction but to me it felt like fantasy due to a lot of the supra natural abilities and of the protagonists an antagonists. The worlds themselves were pretty intriguing too.
Also the Gemmell books about Waylander and Druss have great stories and action.

Good Luck!

Thanks for the replys guys!

I read Bakker's Prince of Nothing first trilogy, was very interesting. Will be reading the second trilogy once the final book has come out. I'm also on Book two of the "First Law" trilogy and I'm loving it.
