A Haunting Poem
I Scream
You Scream
We all Scream
For I Scream.

Just seen it. RIP.
Absolutely mad that it turns out that the book he was writing when he found out he was dying of cancer was about a man dying of cancer. Wtf.

Just seen it myself. It was inevitable but it's still awful
If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. This is awful. RIP Iain.
I also can't believe his last book is about cancer. What a weird coincidence.

I've just seen this on the news.
He was truly an inspirational writer.
He seemed to be doing well so it's a shame that he passed so early and with just a few weeks before the release of The Quarry.
I'm really looking forward to the book now and I'm sure that his final novel will be every bit as good as his first.

FUCK
FUCK
FUCK
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

What a loss to the world of literature. So very sad.

Horrible news.
Read the obituary at the Guardian, which shows just how prolific a writer he was, and Neil Gaiman's reaction.

Uncharacteristically maudlin of me, perhaps, but Banks' passing needs more than just a sad comment:
Phlebas the Phoenician, a fortnight dead,
Forgot the cry of gulls, and the deep seas swell
And the profit and loss.
A current under sea
Picked his bones in whispers. As he rose and fell
He passed the stages of his age and youth
Entering the whirlpool.
Gentile or Jew
O you who turn the wheel and look to windward,
Consider Phlebas, who was once handsome and tall as you.

Very sad news
Loved both of his styles though I probably enjoyed the Culture books slightly more.
Living in Glasgow I always thought "ah well i missed out on signing tickets this year but he will be back next year." Gutted I never got to meet the man!
