Also, Senu was 14 years old and startled Tool with his ability.
They might not be demigods, but clearly their martial prowess is spectacular.

It's clear from various sources that Seguleh warriors train constantly and from childhood.
I think it's fairer to say they are warrior cultists, rather than soldiers or duelists.

Something that bothered me was how the Malazans in K'rul's Bar and Antsy and some others were such pussies in this book.

''Oh no there are bad people knocking on the door let's go hide behind the counter and hope they don't come in!''

I remembered Blend and Picker being huge badasses in Toll the Hounds. What happened?

What happened? Mallet was killed. Bluepearl was killed. Antsy was out of town. And they are slowly losing their edge. Still edgier than most, but also starting to feel the weight of the world upon them and trying to retire in peace. Duiker is kind of Debbie Downer for most of the time as well.

I've thought about something re: the crying Malazans. I think it mirrors nicely how the sappers cried when they got the new munitions from Ganoes in TCG. They may take place concurrently as well, though I never had a problem with soldiers with consciences crying at seeing humans being torn to shreds and dissolved alive.
Theorizing that one could poop within his own lifetime, Doctor Poopet led an elite group of scientists into the desert to develop a top secret project, known as QUANTUM POOP. Pressured to prove his theories or lose funding, Doctor Poopet, prematurely stepped into the Poop Accelerator and vanished. He awoke to find himself in the past, suffering from partial amnesia and facing a mirror image that was not his own. Fortunately, contact with his own bowels was made through brainwave transmissions, with Al the Poop Observer, who appeared in the form of a hologram that only Doctor Poopet could see and hear. Trapped in the past, Doctor Poopet finds himself pooping from life to life, pooping things right, that once went wrong and hoping each time, that his next poop will be the poop home.

I thought of the massacre by cruise missile scene as a shared statement on the advancement of military technology overcoming military skill/advantage.

Pardon the thread necro, but I noticed in the discussion of the Malazans' reaction that no one brought up the idea of the Seguleh being what this book was mostly about.

You have the Daru cast, sure, and the Malazans have plenty of PoVs, but the backbone plot is the Tyrant returning, which immediately pulls in Moranth and Seguleh as primary players. Throughout the entire book, the Malazans are just bystanders reacting while Seguleh PoV gives us insight into the conflict of the past and is where there is the most growth.

Because of this focus on the Seguleh, I would posit that the Malazan's crying reaction was meant to pack a punch due to the reader having insight as to why that Seguleh army was so wrong to begin with. The Malazan's were meant to hint to the reader that we should be crying for the Seguleh.
