Last night I woke up following a terrifying nightmare. I was too scared to get out of bed when I woke up.

I was on the planet from the movie Aliens. It was before Ripley and the marines arrive and I was myself but happened to be there with the colonists as the aliens started to attack. I knew what was happening given I have seen all the movies so was just shitting myself in a mixture of terror and trying to persuade their leader what we needed to do.

Their leader was Steve Martin.

Needless to say Steve Martin is not equipped to lead a terraforming settlement being attacked by xenomorphs. I woke with my heart absolutely hammering. I've had an adrenalin come down all day.

Maybe lay off the 5 balloon glasses of brandy and the "Three Amigos" rewatches before bedtime?

Would you say, I have a plethora of brandy?
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

Scientists have invented a device that can continuously generate electricity from thin air, offering a glimpse of a possible sustainable energy source that can be made of almost any material and runs on the ambient humidity that surrounds all of us[...]

If you've ever seen a bolt of lightning streak across the sky, you've already had a sneak peek of the untapped power that is hidden in ambient air.
[...]

[...] homes, factories, and perhaps whole cities might be powered by the electricity that is concealed in the air.

[...] practically any material could become an Air-gen device provided it was perforated with tiny holes measuring 100 nanometers or fewer[...]

[...] "Importantly, since air humidity is ubiquitous and continuous 24/7, Air-gen can be deployed almost anywhere for continuous energy harvesting [...]

air is diffusive and filled in the entire vertical space, which means that we can stack many layers of air-gen devices [...] more space efficient" than other power sources [...] "[...] can be engineered into varied form factors and neatly blend into the environment (even without one's notice)" versus the example of "a solar panel that exclusively takes up space."

Scientists Working to Generate Electricity From Thin Air Make Breakthrough (vice.com)

Without knowing more I would guess this has the hallmarks of vaporware. Science that sounds great and may indeed work on the small scale but cant in reality be scaled up to realistic numbers.

Hope I am wrong but doubt it.

That's what makes the researchers' claim that it's theoretically '"more space efficient" than other power sources' (energy / m^3?) and scalable through vertical stacking so appealing... but yeah that's the big question. Not going to rush to sell my solar / wind / geothermal stocks and short fossil fuels just yet. (But it would have the advantage over geothermal of not causing earthquakes....)

It’s the same physics at play in storm clouds’ lightning discharges. [...] incredibly promising for scalability and everyday usage. [...] evident when considering that air humidity can diffuse in three-dimensional space. In theory, thousands of Air-gen layers can be stacked atop one another, thus scaling up the device without increasing its overall footprint.

While it may turn out to be vaporware,
Let our hopes not be static---for there will
Still be fresh lightning through the mists & veils....

(lol'd when I finally got the pun---intentional or otherwise...)

Of course that's no reason for complacency about climate change; a technological solution is by no means guaranteed, and humanity should be doing far more than it is.

There was a funeral for a well loved man. The best friend of this man leaned over to the man's widow and asked "do you mind if I say a word?"
"Of course," she replied.
So the friend stood up and said "Plethora." And sat back down.
"Thanks," said the widow, "it means a lot."

The brother of the man also turned to the widow and asked if he could say a word.
"Of course," she said again.
"Global," said the brother before sitting down again.
"Thanks," said the widow, "that means the world."

I would not like to think....that a person would tell someone... he has a plethora...and find out that that person has no idea what it means to have a plethora.

Another promising new method for generating massive amounts of clean energy from the air:

Quote

Scientists just discovered an ‘astonishing’ way to create energy out of thin air: ‘The sky is quite literally the limit’

[...] The enzyme, called Huc, pulls hydrogen from the atmosphere and converts it into electricity.

[...] The scientific journal, Nature, published their findings. [...]

[...] “We’ve known for some time that bacteria can use the trace hydrogen in the air as a source of energy to help them grow and survive, including in Antarctic soils, volcanic craters, and the deep ocean,” [...] “But we didn’t know how they did this until now.”

Not only can Huc turn trace amounts of hydrogen into electric currents, but [...] purified Huc can be stored for long periods of time.

“It is astonishingly stable. It is possible to freeze the enzyme or heat it to 80 degrees Celsius [176 degrees Fahrenheit], and it retains its power to generate energy,” [...] “This reflects that this enzyme helps bacteria to survive in the most extreme environments.”

[...] the bacteria that produce the enzyme can be grown in large quantities, making it a very sustainable resource — like pulling an endless amount of rabbits out of a hat.

[...] The next step is producing Huc on a large scale[...] “the sky is quite literally the limit for using it to produce clean energy.”

Scientists just discovered an ‘astonishing’ way to create energy out of thin air: ‘The sky is quite literally the limit’

Though IDK what the ramifications of removing massive amounts of hydrogen from the atmosphere might be. (Or whether the nanopore 'Air-gen' method, if implemented on a massive scale, would significantly reduce the humidity of the air, or influence the climate....)

Today is the first day of the Isle of Man TT races fortnight. This time last year I was dreading it due to the insane shifts I was meant to be doing and I ended up in a zombified knackered state. This year I get to do my normal office hours and enjoy a couple of bank holidays with the family.

So much better!

Wife starts a full time WFH customer service job as of the 28th.

We have to get through June and July before it eases off - but when she gets her first payday, ease off it will, and almost immediately at that.
