Hi y'all,

I am plundering and pumping my way thru my re-read of DHG.Posted Image

I am remembering bits and pieces but the DENSE nature of the story is starting to get me down a little bit. The Chain 'o Dogs is a solid story thread and the Felisin storyline is good too, just some of the conversations seem to go on forever (not sure if I remembered this last time; quite some years ago)

Is it safe to say that DHG is the most dense of all the malazan books?

I remember MOI being distinctly "easier" to read than DHG

Cheers

Not by a long shot I'm afraid. Lot more density to come in future books.

Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

But you are right in MOI being an easy read, at least it was for me.May be because I was most interested in the characters I already knew (and love) from Gardens.

DoD and TTH come to mind first for me when I think of dense Malazan books.

I suspect the Chain of Dogs is to blame. The tragedy weighs heavily on you especially if you know the outcome.

Ah yes Nacht, you are spot on sir!

The fact that THAT outcome is always in the back of my mind, I am finding it less enthralling that the first time.

I can't remember what happens in the Felicin/Heboric storyline so its a bit more engaging; i remember it being the opposite during the first read Posted Image

Hey all

I need your respected and expert opinion on something with DHG

Be truthful and do not fear about your comments

I have read DHG previously and know the outcome of Cotaine's storyline and the chain of dogs. Should I therefore skim over these sections of the book? As I mentioned in the earlier post Im finding it dense as I know what is coming

Is this a bad idea? or could I get away with it without ruining the overarching storyline?

Cheers

Steamer

I am not really sure I understand your question. You have already read the book once before, so how could it ruin the overall story arc if you already know the content of the book? Be your own judge. Reading should be fun, not a chore.

Yo Gore,

Sorry let me re-iterate.

I have read it before, yes.
I remember the Coltaine outcome.
I meant will it ruin the storyline beyond this book?
I know that he is mentioned in later books.
I can't remember how the Felisin storyline pans out.
It was a general question for yourself and the fellow Malazan experts.
I am not an expert. I am Steamer, a lowly piece of human trash. Thank you for reminding me of this.

Thank you friends,

Sorry for the brash reply.

I have had a horrible week and an even worse September.

I will leave the forums for a while and return after Deadhouse Gates is finished.

Sorry if I have inconvenienced anyone in this forum.

Hey, Steamer. You're not inconveniencing anyone and no one thinks you're trash. Maybe a long book about a hopeless death-march isn't the best choice in your current headspace. Memories of Ice isn't really a laugh riot either.

You could probably get away with skimming the battle scenes on a reread, but there are a lot of individual moments in the Coltaine stuff that will resonate later even excluding the finish.

I never did a full DG reread. (Aldo did not do a full reread of another later MBOTF book) but I read parts of it multiple times.
I strongly dislike the Pomqual ending. Partly blame Laseen for making him a High Fist. Only saving grace is the possibility that Mallick might have put him in a thrall. Otherwise, it just seems so idiotic.

Thanks Archie I appreciated it.

In fact you comment : "Maybe a long book about a hopeless death-march isn't the best choice in your current headspace. Memories of Ice isn't really a laugh riot either" actually gave me a good laugh.

I read a good section today about Kalam and the pirate ship attack which was far less dense than the chain of dogs slog of slogs.

May Kruppe bless you.

Kalam's plotline is probably the 'lightest' in the series, with Fid & co. pretty close. Pearl and Lostara too, tho their bits are pretty brief. Given the sheer grimdark of Felisin and The Chain, i always liked the balance.

That said, there are an absolute pile of interesting little worldbuilding breadcrumbs throughout Felisin and The Chain's stories.
