Ok, so we had something interesting happen last night.

We ran into a group of imps, whom we soundly defeated in a card game. Not to let things end there however, one of my friends goes to one of them to offer a different deck. "hey there buddy, i got another game we can play" all you gotta do is draw a card from this special deck. Think you're up to it?

Of course, the unwitting imp is drawing from the deck of many things. We all know this prank is gona get hilarious.

So Dm draws a card and it's the King of diamonds! We head over to the table and king of diamonds is the Sun card. The imp gets a giant boost in experience and a wondrous item. A party member proceeds to buy the item from him with some fake gold we got from one of those monster chest items. The imp says hey that was fun, can i draw another one, were all like SURE! whats the worse that could happen?

He draws the 2 of spades- head over to the table--- Balance card. Our monster of an imp is now chaotic good. He then proceeds to give back the fake gold.

Queue in a few tough fights with a golem, and a Balor, all of a sudden he comes out of nowhere and pretty much solos the monsters without even blinking (disentegrate with 10d10 dmg XD). We thank him for his help and try to quee up the next fight. We're up against a giant Iron golem this time who can basically one shot most of the party. In comes the imp to help, but on the condition we let him draw another card, and he draws before the monster. After which point we're like why not..

Draws the King of Diamonds agains. Gives over the robes of the archmage to our sorcerer, one shots the boss golem and then phase shifts out of existence to somewhere else.

What started off as a prank, ended up in us creating a chaotic good imp with the power of a demi god running around the world.

WHAT HAVE WE DONE?

Thats awesome. Luckiest imp ever.

The coolest thing that happened in our last session was our Druid/Greatbear suplexing 2 giant spiders 40 feet out of a tree and killing them both instantly.
I've always been crazy but its kept me from going insane.

I started DMing a Ghosts of Saltmarsh (5e) game over the weekend.

Very entertaining so far, we have 2 lizardfolk (one druid and one wizard) who like to laugh at random times and are very good at playing the 'no emotions, but trying to get along with these pinkies' things. We have 1 water genasi cleric and one aasimar paladin, who ended up worshiping the same god even though they setup characters separately.

Very fun so far, and it is really shocking how weak low level characters are. They almost lost someone to a family of giant weasels who were just trying to eat the smallest. Then they were stomping around a 'haunted house, nearly making enough noise to wake the dead.

Thankfully they survived, even though a huge amount of bad rolls on their part, purely on the back of the moon druid that gets Brown Bear (36HP and 2 +6 attacks at level 2). It was a close run thing, but much more tense than what I generally throw at them with homebrew, for low levels anyway. It just taught me to be meaner to my low level PCs.

That's all for now in this journal of 'What did DM-Obdi fuck up today'. Stay tuned for further updates!

levels 1-5 are the most brutal. Not that the game neccesarily stop being hard, but past that you're no longer in every monster/every ability can OHKO territory.

And action economy means # of enemies is normally worse than single enemies with high damage. The lower levels it's very easy to start a fight that is 3v3 and have one person get hit 2v1, putting them down quickly. Long term the party will win out but it makes the enemies seem more dangerous than they are.

Yo yo yo.

Ok, so my group rotates DM between the 4 of us. We all REALLY like playing and are all decent at DM'ing, so we just rotate campaigns every few sessions.

I'm wanting to try something different with mine. The idea is to do a modern campaign loosely based in the Dresden world.

Anyone have any experience with modern firearms in DnD, or in running modern campaigns?

Thanks all!

I am pretty sure that there is a Dresden Files RPG out there somewhere.

EDIT: Here you go!

Dude, my google-fu sucks. Thank you.

Works well since it was also going to integrate some "Monster of the Week" stuff in there also, and they're both EvilHat. Sweet.

The Trove has pretty much every RPG system that exists out there in PDF format, I always check there first when trying to dig up RPG material! :)

I've been watching an interesting show on PBS called "Retro Report". The premise of the show is to return to noteworthy news stories from the past and show how they may still be relevant to today's 'hot button' issues. With an emphasis on how original opinions and preconceived ideas have changed about the topic covered.

One of the interesting stories covered (and ideal for this thread) is how the perceptions and opinions about D&D during the 'satanic panic 1980s' has now changed to the positive, get kids away from their devices and encourage them to express their imagination and be more creative with their minds and have more real, in person, social interactions.

Second session of DnD (ever), and my character is dead — full death. RIP Karrde the Bard.

Long live my new character, Talat Two-Knocks the Rogue.

——

My DM is running a modified campaign from '79 — mostly a dungeon crawler with big mobs around every corner — within the 5e ruleset. My impression is those don't necessarily mesh, since old DnD is loot-n-slash, while new DnD is more storytelling. Right?

Either way, it is fun — though I'm definitely more of a lore and worldbuilding guy. I want more NPCs that I can persuade and deceive... I'll have to get more of that in somehow...

Also, how do we not have a forum DnD (or other system) game going? I'd think we could get an awesome storytelling-focused group of players together!

I'd be down to try.

DM'd my second session for our group this weekend. It went really well. Running a modern theme basically set in the Dresden timeline. Next session will have some tie in with the Knights of the Cross and the Denarians. So friggin excited.

Saturday nights session was by far the best our group has had. RP was on point and precise, combat was tense enough they were worried, but they all pulled through.

Of course nothing went as planned. I prepared 5 maps depending on what direction they went, of course they chose none of those and i had to get out the battle map and draw one.

They also made no strides in the main quest because they got so fucking lucky with their side quests. Last session they rescued a guy called the Collector, who collects odd magical items with no discernible purpose. He rewarded them with items they had to figure out.
-The rogue had to drop to 0hp to figure out how to find the other pieces of his shattered dagger. Of course he goes down fighting a Devourer within the first hour of play. He then got suuuper lucky realizing the lady he'd been talking to in his workshop was actually in his head.
-The Paladin received a bag of colding with a severed human head in it with a diamond sufficient for True Resurrection clamped in its jaw. Of the 9 npcs they are in regular contact with, he somehow got lucky enough to show it to the one character that could recognize the scar on the cheek of the dude in the bag.
-The warlock hasnt figured hers out yet, but she's not happy with her patron (Titania), so that'll be interesting.

We ended the session meeting Sanya and they suitably flipped.

I like these guys and don’t want them to die in a single round, so probably never.
A good chance they’ll run into a lesser Denarian soon though.

Its amazing, I love it and they're loving it.

They're so much lore built up by the Dresdenverse. Anything i want to add into it from regular DnD? its the Fae/nevernever, its huge. So its a good balance of modern/urban campaign, but there is still dungeons and forests to explore.
