I am beside myself with anticipation for a new Trek series! They say that it is going to take place 10 years before TOS and THANKFULLY is not going to be in that horrible alternate timeline.

I've been out trolling for spoilers but haven't found much yet. I thought this was interesting:

"There's an incident, an event in Star Trek history in the history of Starfleet that had been talked about but never fully explored. [We're telling] that story through a character who is on a journey that is going to teach her how to get along with others in the galaxy."

What could that "incident" be????

If it's set in the true Trek timeline then I'm 100 in. I hate what new movies did so so much

I agree. I was mortified by the first "new" Trek movie and haven't watched another. The whole Spock character was completely off, and Spock with UHURA?! An abomination.

The thing that I found unbelievable was that by destroying the Vulcans they basically crippled Star Fleet! Its like if during WW1 we removed britain!

I have a sneaking suspicion that this one will be set underwater.

Been there, done that,, it was called SEAQUEST (no seriously, that's how it was pitched, "Star Trek underwater") it was more awesome than it had any right to be, had a cyborg hyper intelligent dolphin and a Wesley Crusher-like character who DIDNT suck who invented a one man personal sea-attack fighter vehicle with a shark tail fin as propulsion....the ship was captained by the guy who beat fucking Jaws (twice)....and later on gave the ship to Michael Goddamned Ironside.

Dammit, now I miss SEAQUEST, you bastards!

Also Don't get me started on SLIDERS.

Exactly my point, QT. It's time to mesh the continuities.

I was very pleased with the reboot. I couldn't care less whether Spock shouldn't be with Uhura, or however else it diverges from the original series. I am never going to watch all of the old Star Trek. I have no interest in a movie that builds on four tv-shows and a number of other movies, most of which are terrible. As with Star Wars, I am happy that they decided to go at it with a relative blank slate, while still adding nods to the original.

Mind you. I would much rather have preferred they'd do something new, rather than another IP reboot, but when they decided to do that I am happy to have enjoyed the result.

I like the new films as well...but I will admit to enjoying the fact that it's a partially alt-contiuity. It leaves the Prime universe alone to continue on at will.

I should note, I'm excited for DISCOVERY. We've been too long without a ST show on TV...and the fact that in Canada it's airing on Space and we don't have to pay for a steaming service.

I was never a fan of the TV show so I've got no view on it (other than I enjoy the films, especially 1 and 3) but isn't it better that when they went big-budget action-style in a new universe than cramming all that stuff in the old one where it wouldn't have fit?

Like, I know most fans would probably disagree but I for one would not be offended as a Doctor Who fan if they did a blockbuster movie that was unrelated to the universe of the shows (yes, it's been tried before, and yes, it was shit, but that just means you don't have to consider the shitness true canon if you so choose).

Anyway, this is being showrun by Bryan Fuller. So it'll be interesting.
I can't carry it for you, but I can carry you.

I think that's the main reason I felt like any fan ire about the new film continuity not being in the Prime universe seems off-base. Abrams went out of his way to make sure his reboot tread on no ones toes, the existing continuity exists and ONLY crosses over where Spock visits himself. Everything else is separate. No childhoods ruined ect.

I still dislike how it's a pre original series setting (or pre TNG, can't recall, don't care).

It would be so simple to jump to a post-Voyager time and just move forward. Even if they didn't want to update the tech they could write that off to some plot point conflict.

But no... we're getting Enterprise: The Next Generation.

I think Fuller's a genius and sincerely hope that he includes at least one character who is just a thinly veiled Hannibal analogy who enjoys his Klingons with fava beans and a nice Chianti, but even so, I fear this is a mistake.

Same problem with the Abramsverse movies. I recognize the dollar motivation for a reboot with familiar names over something new, and the time travel thing was a decent workaround that has turned out entertaining movies, but even so, I hate that 'reboot' has overtaken 'new' when it comes to Trek.

Im with Morgy on this one.
The original seried was low rent sci fi, the later ones had a few interesting episodes and the films were mostly dross. The reboot trilogy brought star trek to the wider audience and was a much more palatable experience than the awkward jilting dialogue that shatber delivered.

Pretty much vehemently disagree with everything you just said, Mac.

I'm pretty firmly in the "Who cares?" camp about the new show.

"Prime" timeline = yay
Prequel = suck
Streaming service = f@$% you

What's it coming out on?

Network TV (CBS) for the premiere, subsequent episodes on CBS All Access.

Unless you're basically anywhere in the world that's not America, in which case it's on Netflix.

In Canada it will be on Space channel, but yeah we don't have to pay extra for it either.
