Ok so I picked up a very large number of Horus Heresy books. They also have Grey Knights, Blood Angels, Iron Warriors. Any good?

Additionally, once I browsed through there stuff (the place is a mess) I found they have Warhammer fantasy books. Now I have read only 4 of these before - the vampire trilogy, which I found interesting and the first Gotrek and Felix book which I didn't like. So any recommendations regarding this?

They have Malus Darkblade, Sigmar, Empire books, Angelika Fleischer etc

Off thread topic but they also have Tad WIlliams' older books and quite a few of the Shannara books, Worth it?

Oddly enough, I've never touched Warhammer regular. I have zero clue about any of it.

I think you'll get more joy out of Tad than Shannara, but the latter isn't bad per se. I'd skip entirely, but there are some good bits in both.
I survived the Permian and all I got was this t-shirt.

Out of interest has anyone ever delved into the (ludicrously extensive) fan fiction for Warhammer (and 40K)?

As per usual there is astonishing amounts of appalling dross, with a few good writers here and there dragging gold out the quagmire (so rather like the entire HH series with the few decent authors pulling it up now that i think about it.....)

personal favourites - Rise of the Tau (set in 43k or so, and attempting to tie up EVERY SINGLE LOOSE END in the 40k background - and damn near achieving it. Also features nearly every 'named' character ever used just about, in some way, shape or form)

The shape of the Nightmare to Come (set in 50k, more a general progression of the timeline, with the notable fact that EVERYTHING got worse. For everybody.)

Admittedly both require a reasonable grasp of the 40k background material to get 'every' reference that's squeezed in, but they're both pretty accessible to be honest.
meh. Link was dead :(

I'm aghast at how things could get worse for everybody in 10k years. Things are pretty bad as they are now.

I'll put the fanfic on the list for a couple months hence.

I avoid 99% of fanfic, but back in maybe 2003, I somehow stumbled upon a good Gundam Wing one - http://www.seventhmo...snk/index2.html - even though I never actually watched the entirety of Gundam Wing or even thought it was particularly awesome as a tv show.

Given the sheer volume of Warhammer fiction and the rather fast rate at which it is churned out, I would have thought that fanfic would be superfluous.
How exactly can things get worse? Chaos conquers everything?

On the subject of fanfic, quite a few years back, when I was waiting for Harry Potter number 7 to come out a friend gave me a fanfic he found which was the authors imagination of the 7th book. Apart from the drunken sex (inevitable) it was surprisingly good. It took the 'power of love' literally and had Harry blasting stuff and found a very neat solution to the Horcrux problem without bringing in any Hallows. I think i it was called the 7th horcrux

No, it literally gets worse for EVERYBODY, without any faction dominating.

So after finishing the Eisenhorn trilogy, I decided to finally bust into the Horus Heresy books.

Grabbed Abnett's HORUS RISING....and I'm already confused.

Can anyone help?

So the Emperor made Horus Warmaster (the first Warmaster) and a year later he's attacking 63-19 (Terra? Earth?) with the rest of the Luna Wolves Adeptes Astartes, and there is an Emperor on there who claims he is the real emperor...and Horus and Co. think they know the real emperor and this one must die..ect? But when I google this to figure it out, it appears that this IS the real Emperor....da fuq?

I'm not following this AT ALL. Am I just really stupid? Who is the Emperor that I know as the one everyone fights for in 40k.....and how does the Warmaster think one of false?

Man, I'm lost.

Also, the space marine's have a lingo some of which is hard to follow.

Horus was indeed made Warmaster of the Grand Crusade by the Emperor. The planet they're besieging at the beginning of the book is an extant colony, not the real Earth. The ruler of that colony coincidentally called it Earth and himself "Emperor of Mankind".

I was a bit confused about that in the beginning as well.

At the time this is happening, the father/creator of Horus, the actual Emperor is on the actual Earth working on his secret project.

Phew! That's kind of the vibe I got but then I wondered if that as the right way to think and maybe this was the real emperor...

What a weird way to start a new series Mr. Abnett. LOL

Thanks man!

There are some genuinely great books in that series. Push through the not great Counter and Swallow books early on.

I'm going to stop you right there though, Swallows Fear to Tread was pretty damn decent.

The mighty Paul Kearney has a WH40K novel out next year, called CALGAR'S SIEGE. It's a stand-alone in the 40K BATTLES line.

Correct, but Galaxy in Flames and Flight of the Eisenstein are not good. They're not terrible, but having the McNeill books before and after is a marked contrast.

I don't think I've read Galaxy in Flames, but I did try to read Flight of the Eisenstein without finishing. I agree, it wasn't very good.

I finished FALSE GODS and have some spoiler comments.

Spoiler

Onto GALAXY IN FLAMES which I'll go into knowing it's not as good as the first two books. Still willing to give Swallow a chance though.

There's no possession regarding that particular character.

Glad you enjoyed the start. The series goes fun places even as it takes a little bit of a dip right now.

Cool. I figured as much. Yeah, I have the first 5 books purchased, after that I'll be picky and choosy...but so far I'll grab anything by Abnett and McNeill.

I just finished The Damnation of Pythos, you can skip that one for sure. Not a good book and contributes little to nothing.
I would also recommend Aaron Dembski-Bowden's books, one of the best BL-authors in my opinion.

I just finished the first three Horus Hersey books and thoroughly enjoyed them. I'm about halfway into The Flight of Eisenstein and I'm really liking it so far. It continues the story line.
