The sad thing is that there simply is no credible opposition in the UK, which means that the idiots have free reign. Nothing is suitably challenged, reviewed or discussed.

The people were given a credible choice opposing the current status quo, and they rejected it because all our domestic problems are the fault of Johnny Foreigner and actually solving those problems admits that actually the UK is fallible.

Realistically Labour as configured now isn't going to offer proper opposition. Its trying to marry too broad a church which doesn't have enough of a unifying aim to do so (compared to the conservatives which is power) and that aim isn't aligned with how British society has been constructed.

The missed shot on PR was a big blow to bringing equilibrium to British politics.

I'm not a big Starmer fan, but I genuinely do not understand the uproar about this. Surely if you want to reach out to voters from all backgrounds, you will need to provide content on media channels that they actually sample? This is the same as chastising Joe Biden for appearing on Fox News. How is Biden ever going to bring his point across to all those Americans for whom Fox News is the only source of political information, if he is unwilling to appear on that channel in the first place? Manchester United will still have to play in the Etihad Stadium if they want to have an opportunity to get 3 more points, regardless of how they may loathe the ground.
Yesterday, upon the stair, I saw a man who wasn't there. He wasn't there again today. Oh, how I wish he'd go away.

100% this. There is too much spread along 'left wing' voters to ever satisfy everyone without coalition governments, whereas the Tories have simply incorporated some populist and far right ideas into their already dodgy portfolio to comfortably remain the default voter option on the right side of the political spectrum. Labour in its current state is too confused and is tearing itself apart in a painful split trying to remain standing with one leg in the political centre and the other in the far left. It just doesn't work. Starmer is currently trying to steer them to 'Blair-ite' centre ground, but that 'centre ground' was shifted to the right during and after the New Labour days and the Tories have a comfortable foothold there already these days. Plus they also find the Lib Dems in that space. Labour needs to reconnect with their union/socialist background or face irrelevance.

But perhaps not for a newspaper you promised never to interview for because of the Hillborough stories. Other right wing media is available.

The perfectly fair point above about specific choice of right wing media aside, I agree with this and I genuinely feel it's what at least some of Labour don't understand. Being purist will keep them in opposition forever.

Would be fun to see Biden on Newsmax. Or RT America (Russian state television)....

It's fine, Christmas is about the people. Any food will do.

Where I said people I meant presents and where I said any food I mean chocolates and pizza.

'More than a quarter of Britons have already started their Christmas shopping amid warnings that pandemic shortages and supply chain snags could see shelves empty of toys [...] Retailers ranging from toy chains to supermarkets have warned that supply chain issues, largely due to a shortage of lorry drivers, could affect stock levels this Christmas.'

https://uk.finance.y...GbHoUXDn22NHqqI

As for chocolate:

'the UK faces further potential supermarket shelf shortages – including confectionery, snacks and bakery aisles, amid Brexit-related supply chain complications'

https://www.confecti...chain-concerns/

'UK consumers may have to get used to some food shortages in supermarkets as the country faces up to a dearth of labour, the head of trade body The Food and Drink Federation has suggested.

"It's going to get worse, and it's not going to get better after getting worse any time soon.

"The result of the labour shortages is that the just-in-time system that has sustained supermarkets, convenience stores and restaurants – so the food has arrived on-shelf or in the kitchen, just when you need it – is no longer working.

"And I don't think it will work again. I think we will see we are now in for permanent shortages."'

https://www.just-foo...ade-body-chief/

'The Time to Buy Your Holiday Presents Is Now

[... On top of UK-specific issues:] Nearly every industry has been impacted by supply chain shortages. But a few of these will affect our holiday shopping the most.

Computer chips have been in short supply throughout the pandemic. As we reported earlier this year, almost every device you own is made up of specialized microprocessors that require specialized factories to make them. [...]

The Covid-19 pandemic has also driven us inside to read books. For those of us who haven't yet converted to the Kindle, paper books will also be hard to come by. [...]

The shipping container shortage has particularly affected industries with overseas manufacturing, which means that popular plastic toys like L.O.L. Surprise dolls are clogged up in ports overseas.'

The Sun is at its core a paper designed to rile up workers against other workers - especially foreign ones - so Starmer writing for them demonstrates quite handily that he is not on the side of the worker. Not that his previous actions proved to the contrary mind (see: why Labour are in such an absolute financial shambles right now).

If reaching out to UKIP / Brexit Party / Britain First voters (The Sun's readership base) is his tactic then I want no part of it. Add to that his strategy is 'let's be Tories, but RED' and... no, he can fuck right off. He's had his chance, and his party as they are now are not one I can vote for with any clear conscience.

So a bunch of high profile Tories are stepping down. House of cards falling for the turd of a PM? I'd love to see the whole rotten bunch get cast to the wolves but no doubt once he's gone another even worse person will take his place, as is custom...

It's so bad, he seems like a sensible choice at this point. I remember thinking he was the devil incarnate when he was Health Secretary.

My MP was vice-Chair of the party and resigned live on air. He's supported absolutely everything else. The fucker can just sense his seat is in jeopardy since we're one of those affluent southern seats where the combined Lib/Lab vote his higher than his own. What a twat.

I have no idea whether we'll even have a minister for my agency this time tomorrow. That's kind of odd. But we were here before they arrived, and we'll be here after they've gone. Which is, of course, why they hate us. So yeah.

My MP is Angela Rayner btw. She may end up as my boss soon, depending on how things go.

Not exactly a fan of Starmer, but one of the things that Corbyn had in common with Boris is that he was precisely the wrong man in the wrong job at the wrong time - not ever going to forgive him for his stance during the Brexit Referendum.
PR may come into play after the next election, if we're left with a minority government. Which has its disadvantages, as it'll mean we'll see the Tories back in the game sooner than we would have otherwise.

If an opinion contrary to your own makes you angry, that is a sign that you are subconsciously aware of having no good reason for thinking as you do. If some one maintains that two and two are five, or that Iceland is on the equator, you feel pity rather than anger, unless you know so little of arithmetic or geography that his opinion shakes your own contrary conviction. … So whenever you find yourself getting angry about a difference of opinion, be on your guard; you will probably find, on examination, that your belief is going beyond what the evidence warrants. The disgusting bunch of opportunists quitting now and citing "integrity"! They wouldn't know integrity if it walked up and smashed a foot into their nether regions.

Me too - she really is the biggest vindictive car crash of the lot. Although Dominic Raab runs her a close second.

I agree with Mez too - I have no goodwill for the host of them resigning now. They stood by him through EVERYTHING ELSE. They can't pretend to suddenly care now and expect anyone with half a brain to take them at their word.

On the plus side, I'll freely admit to to thoroughly enjoying the idea of how uncomfortable this has been for Boris. Thoroughly and well deserved - it's just such a shame he had the time to do the damage he's done.
