The Waters of Mars turned out to be mostly a bit meh!; the only redeeming features being the creepy monster (not quite up there with the Weeping Angels or the Vashta Narada, but stilll good) and

I'd have been far happier with the episode had we left it with The Doctor in that mood but, unfortunately, it didn't last...

I was utterly creeped out by that special... the visual effects they employ for some of their monsters really are spot-on.

I am very dissapointed, like others, that

I enjoyed it, same feelings as others though regarding parts of the episode.

Thanks for the heads up, would have had to wait another month to see it in the US, instead the internet is my friend.

Apropos of nothing much really, I saw this place on a recent visit to Continental Europe... I didn't go in, but I was sorely tempted; if only to see if it was bigger on the inside...

So, Steven Moffat is taking the reins as Showrunner for series 5, Matt Smith will be the 11th Doctor and Karen Gillan will be the subject of our drooling as the new companion Amy Pond......but....in the same vein as the Doctor Who books being considered cannon, Russel Davies wants one last hurrah. David Tennant will apparently star one last time as the 10th Doctor in a Doctor Who film being made that will hit theatres in 2011! So while Matt Smith will play the most recent incarnation of the Doctor, Tennant will apparently show us one of the adventures from his tenure we didn't see in the TV series.

That excites me...but I'm a Tennant fan. :p

Good news there. I like Tennant too.

I heard they did 5 specials with Tennant, so any ideas when the other 3 are supposed to air? Maybe Christmas/Easter?
They would have to do them before the new season starts, but I don't know when that is supposed to be either.

Well i know there is supposed to be a 2-parter to finish off Tennant's run as the Doctor over the Christmas break, and as far as i'm aware, that's it!

I don't know of any other specials with him (other than the proposed movie that Quick Tidal mentioned).

Edit - Just did a check, there have been 3 specials done already, The Next Doctor (Christmas 2008), Planet of the Dead (april 2009), Water of Mars (Nov 2009), and 2 more to come, The End of Time parts 1+2 (Christmas 2009).

And then, spring 2010 for the new version of the doctor to appear.

Yep, The Next Doctor was good, Planet of the Dead was better, and The Waters of Mars was REALLY good...the upcoming two-parter The End Of Time looks like a really good swansong for Tennant and Davies tenure on Who.

Well once someone is kind enough to mention that an episode aired, I find it on the internet hehe.
Though I did not know about The Next Doctor. I'll have to watch that today.

@Centz- I agree that would be interesting.

So, The End Of Time Part 1 has aired. Thoughts?

I thought it....weird but still good. It was like watching the whole various and disparate set-up pieces to a long story and then having to stop before everything draws together and ties itself up, so I have all these pieces and I'm not sure what will be done to them, which is not a bad thing and now I only have to wait a week to see the rest. WOOHOO! Tennant was really good, Bernard Cribbins was AMAZING, and there is one scene with the two of the that blew me away emotionally. The Master was good, but strange. Chaotic insanity on his part mostly.

Not very good would be my verdict. A Master who shoots fucking lightning bolts and can jump buildings? WTF?

I'm excited for the return of the Time Lords and the death of the Doctor and regeneration. I'm hoping Moffat can do some amazing things with the the show.

Yeah, that's an understandable assessment Rodeo.....if there's one thing Davies constantly can't do well it is finish up and give us finales worthy of the rest of his series. I can't give it a full seal of approval as it stands either, and it likely wouldn't even stand as one of my faves from the whole four years, but I'll keep my hopes up for the final bit...but you are right, even more importantly, I am excited to see Moffat's run with Matt Smith begin. :p

I didn't really like that episode - way too much filler, an excess of scenes involving little more than the doctor doing some running, a good performance from John Simm as the master but far too much screen time for him. The scene with the Master's resurrection was frankly pathetic, and what the hell was up with the excessive Obama love?

Having said that, I like the set up for the return of the Time-Lords - I think having a multitude of recurring characters for the Doctor to interact with will help reinvigorate the show. I won't be sad to see the end of Tennant - he's been a good Doctor, but his brand of hyperactivity was starting to grate with me a little (although that might just have been RTD's quirks as a showrunner, I'm not really sure).

I think more of the show's current faults lie with RTD than with Tennant.

Oh, I agree whole-heartedly. Tennant is an excellent actor (the BBC aired a version Hamlet on Boxing Day with him in the leading role, and he was pretty good in that too), but the fast-talking, fast-running Doctor has been starting to wear thin with me for quite a while now. I'm quite happy to lay the blame for that at RTD's feet, but I don't think it's something Moffat would be able to change unless he had a new reincarnation to work with.

I can guarantee that in the final RTD episode there will be plenty of crying and slow shots of the Doctor saying "I'm sorry, I'm so sorry."

And running. Lots of running.

I'm tempted to do a rewatch and work out the percentage of time that the Doctor spends running per episode in the specials this year. I'm willing to bet it would be quite a significant proportion. But that would mean watching that Desert and Bus episode, which I have no desire ever to see again.

I saw an interview with Bernard Cribbens the other day, and was amused at what he said about the experience of working on Doctor Who. It was something along the lines of: "David Tennant is one of the fastest actors I've ever worked with! I don't mean the speed he does his acting, although that's pretty quick too, I mean the speed he gets from one place to another. You've got to do a lot of running on Doctor Who, and I was really struggling to keep up with him." (I paraphrase, but that was the gist of it. And knowing that, there was a scene where The Doctor and Wilf were infiltrating the building with the gate that was given an added dimension of hilarity)

One aspect of the "End of Time" that I found interesting was the 10th Doctor's fear of not only death but also regeneration. He seemed genuinely angry and afraid of transitioning into the 11th Doctor. I can't recall any other Doctor really being scared of regenerating into a new iteration. The 9th Doctor seemed sad but also damn near giddy as he regenerated. It's an aspect of the 10th's personality that I wish RTD would explore a bit more.

This is a great comment and comes from the best scene in Part 1. That was something I really enjoyed hearing, it gives the character of the Doctor more depth, makes him seem less immortal. Like he does essentially live for like 12 lifetimes, but it's not like it's completely him....each one has a different essence and personality with all the same info inside them....I really dug hearing that idea too.
