Two fucking weeks of multiple people outside my office having chatty meetings...managers too...so I've had a headache for two weeks. I want my fucking silent workspace back.

Also, my mom starts Chemo today so my anxiety is through the roof.

A couple of things that have mygroove messed with of late:

- From that movie set with the Alec Baldwin incident - a worker helping to break down and pack up the set got bitten by a brown recluse spider... he almost lost his arm. That movie is cursed. Brown Recluse spiders are a nasty affair; the bite site goes necrotic and it just grows. I can tell you not to image search "brown recluse spider bite goes necrotic" (cause just don't), but you know you will now.

- The information that keeps coming out about that Travis Scott concert. Bloody hell.

Took a massive, toilet-filling shit (the kind you have to lift your ass away from as it comes out)... went to flush... nothing. Tried my tub, water barely trickling out. Kitchen also just a trickle.

Put an old thermos under the faucet, kept waiting for it to fill (could hear when it started overflowing) and then filling the tank. After about an hour, it flushed.

Had to wait a few more hours for the water to go back on.

Was already going to be extremely busy today....

+ Rittenhouse verdict, ugh. Not guilty on *any* charges? Ridiculous....

Your dump is an apt metaphor for the Shittenhouse verdict.

Would be better if it was somehow on fire though. Not for you, obviously. ;)

Add to the list of groove being messed with

- Missing tennis player in China.

It may be controversial to say it, but I think 2021 might be worse than 2020.

I despise sponsoring people’s bills at restaurants in America. The etiquette is to split the bill however many ways. The thing is I don’t drink. So it’s not unusual for others to be 2 or 3 or even 4 drinks/cocktails in to my one beer or soda.

Which means when the bill gets split equally I’m sponsoring 25% of everyone’s drinks.

Also I hate sharing plates gaps style food. The dishes that are good you get one bite off, and for every dish that is good you try one that is average or just bad.

I guess on the whole, despite having a great time tonight (I enjoyed the company) I really regret spending that much money on what was really just an average dinner.

It IS ok to just opt out of the common bill and do your own thing.
I realize there's a purported social stigma thing but no one who cares is worth caring about.

Alternately, it's the price of socializing.

Seems a lot more common for everybody to pay for their own these days tbh most restaurants I've been to in recent times will happily facilitate it. The only real issue is of someone forgets what drinks they've had or even deliberately omits something and leaves someone else to pick up the slack. Thankfully I don't socialise with anyone like the latter.

The count from aerial surveys of BC floods is about ten significant highway bridges with major structural damage. Typically multispan bridges where one abutment has completely washed out dropping the end span into the river. Once inspectors are on the ground everywhere, the total will at least double. Multiple major washouts on the Coquihalla and Highway 8. Literally sections where hundreds of metres of roadway is gone - just ends with a 6-8m drop into the river. You can probably double the number of bridges out once local roads are taken into account and again with resource access roads (forestry and hydro). CP rail also announced today they require repairs at 30 sites (CN may have similar numbers).

Expectations are 4-6 months for limited opening of the Trans-Canada, Coquihalla and Highway 8. The goal on the ground at this point is stabilise vulnerable sections, as it's going to keep raining for the next six months, and build in temp access to get crews to sites. The complete rebuild will take years. The hydrological models for pretty much every river basin and watershed in Southern BC will be recalibrated after this.

BC transport flickr site has more photos for anyone interested.

Wait, this is a thing? I've never been to a restaurant and had the bill split equally between people, everyone always pays for what they ordered. Even if the restaurant won't split the bill, we do the math.

So the new job is great. However I need to select my health care benefits. The company promised 100% coverage for medical and 80% coverage for dental and vision.

The fine print is they will cover a maximum of 850 dollars a Month for health care (god it’s expensive), 15 for dental and 3 for vision.

The part that’s messing with my groove is somehow looking at my possible options I swear that despite paying 850 a month which I swear is more than what my last job paid, the coverage is somehow worse. Slightly higher deductible and a slightly higher maximum out of pocket. I can’t wrap my head around how this is possible.

Similarly the dental benefits seem worse for the same money.

In South Africa a waiter would come to the table with the card machine and you go around the table one by one and pay your share.

In America the waiter takes the card and goes to the back and does the bill. It complicated things to an absurd degree. Also besides having to calculate tip, which is billed separately to the food bill (also drives me nuts) they don’t include tax in the price of anything, which also complicated the maths.

Some places have upgraded to have technology, I think often because of covid to let you pay by a phone website or something which is easier.

I have found myself in the position to find out that I need better friends.

I'm supposed to be moving to my new apartment (yay to that!) next weekend. Covid cases are exploding in Germany, though not as wildly in my immediate area. So I've been very upfront that while I'd like people to help me I would understand that they may not feel safe and decline. Everyone said "Nah, we good, we're coming." My entire friend group is fully vaxxed AND I'm planning on buying self-tests for everyone.

Come this weekend:

Exhibit A: "Actually, I don't have a bus ticket, sorry."
Me: "That's okay, I can either pay for your ticket or you can come with B who'll come by car."
Exhibit B: "NO WAY! CORONA! You can come but ONLY with masks AND all the windows open for the entire drive!"
Exhibit C: "I'm cool either way, I'm coming."*
Exhibit B: "But you come by train! Ugh!"

I legit only asked for help for transporting small stuff like clothes and assemble a few pieces of furniture which I cannot do alone. I am already PAYING people to transport said furniture beforehand. If you are that scared just say so and stop pretending. I understand. What I do not understand is that whole "Yes, BUT!" when I already have stated clearly that I would understand if the reason someone cannot come is because they fear Covid. What that tells me is that Friend B is expecting me to keep all the windows open all the time, fully aware that I have asthma and chronic bronchitis in fucking DECEMBER so I can be thankful I had help with assembling my bed, in which I can then spend the next two weeks because I WILL be sick aftwards, and not with Covid.

Just say you can't be arsed and be done with it.

As it stands now, two people are willing to help me: one friend who has to take a train for two and a half hours to get here and the one friend I have known the least amount of time. My so called best friends all have found a reason to not help me the one single time I have asked for help in EVER since meeting them.

I don't know, maybe I'm asking for too much. I'm fine with opening the windows regularly, with providing tests and I am absolutely pro masking. But I WILL NOT be keeping the windows open for hours when it's freezing outside. That's ridiculous. Just say you can't be arsed.

*As of now, you either have to be recovered, fully vaxxed or have been tested in the past 24 hours to use a train here.

Edit: Sorry if I am incoherent, I also have a headache *sigh*

Sorry to hear that Puck. For the most part, I’ve found that while people may genuinely like you, they can get pretty flakey about moving…You can get over this hurdle, and then happily settle into YOUR apartment. *hugs*

Don't you hate it when you build up the peckishness so you can go grab a nosh at THE spot during off hours to avoid the breakfast/lunch/dinner rush, only to find it packed? That's the pits man.

Oh this annoys the hell out of me. It's plain bad manners. Whenever I'm out with a mixture of drinkers and non-drinkers you make it clear from the start you won't be expecting non-drinkers to subsidise your drinking. The easiest way is to split the food bill equally and the drinks bill between the drinkers, with a bit of rounding so that non-drinkers pay for their drinks. Someone does have to get the phone calculator out at the end of the night though. Cause - I'd just be that person at the start if I was you. If you lay it out plainly then I don't think anyone can argue. And if they do then they have marked themselves out as someone you don't need to have dinner with again. I expect you are making new friends in a new town though so have to suck some of this stuff up for a while.

Got woken up at 3 am by what I think is my radiator making a wierd noise like a buzzsaw. When I realized it was coming from the radiator and not outside like I thought I actually got quite concerned. I have called maintenance but as it’s still only 4:30 am I suspect it will be a while.

I can sleep through anything. Or thought I could. Sounds like a power tool, and it goes off every ten seconds and last ten seconds. Impossible to ignore

Air in the system? If you've got the correct key you should just be able to bleed it.

Got upskilled at work so I now deal with complex matters, occasionally borderline multi-track. Huzzah! Except of course, no pay rise to go with that so I'm working on much harder files for the same pittance as before. Nozzah.
