I love Christmas.
I love telling Christians how fucked up their holidays are.
Let's slaughter a goat and praise Odin.
But.
What's your favourite:
Christmas tradition
Christmas Song
Christmas film
For me.
It's my family traditions of meeting up on on various days over the holidays. I love my family, both nuclear and extended and my friends are always surprised how close my extended family is.

Tradition: Christmas biscuits - Zimtsterne, Husarenkrapfen, Springerlen, Hildas, Mandeltaler, ... (Most of these things don't exist outside of Germany, right?)
Song: Macht hoch die Tür, Oh Tannenbaum, Süßer die Glocken nie klingen? I don't have a real favorite. But it is definitly not Last Christmas

This may seem funny. I am not a Christian. The country live in has a small Christian minority. Yet Christmas is celebrated with a lot of excitement.
Park Street is an area in the city centre. It's the main party spot with restaurants and clubs. For Christmas it gets completely decked up in lights. People usually go there to hang out.
The other thing my group of friends does is attend midnight Christmas church service. The Catholic service at St. Paul's Cathedral and the Orthodox service at the Greek Orthodox Church are both very popular.
The third thing, the one which is the most universal is Mixed Fruit Cake. At this time nearly everyshop starts selling cake. But the most famous and sought after cake are the ones made and sold by the vintage bakery shop Nahoum's in New Market

Tradition: Dancing around the Christmas tree. Even though I really hate singing it's still fun to go around the tree. Especially the fast songs.
Song: Last Christmas by Wham. I don't care what other people say, this is the best Christmas pop song.
Movie: Die Hard 1. Ho ho ho Now I have a Machine Gun.

Christmas tradition: Honestly, Christmas used to be my favourite time of the year but I've really only put in a token effort since my mum died. We haven't even put up the tree yet. The only tradition we still do is watch Carols by Candlelight and mock the performers/performances on Christmas Eve. Christmas Day is a designated 'us' day, meaning we spend it with just the members of our household. Any family gathering things are reserved for the 23rd or Boxing Day, though I tend to weasel my way out of those.
Christmas Song: I love Christmas carols, the more hymn like the better. We Three Kings, The Holy City, Good King Wenceslas. My favourite Carols performance is still when Hugh Jackman, David Hobson, and Peter Cousen sung We Three Kings. This is the only youtube I could find of it. The visual is horrible but the sound is okay. We Three Kings
Movies:
Die Hard
Gremlins
Rudolph the Red Nose Reindeer (the one with the Island of Misfit Toys)

Tradition - everyone gets a small but special present on Christmas Eve.
Song - I'm really off Christmas music, I loathe hearing bad 80's pop songs in every shop from the end of November, it seriously puts me off going out. For the Christmas feels I actually quite like listening to Carols from Kings College, despite being a goat burning pagan.
Film - Muppets Christmas Carol. You can't beat Dickens. With muppets. Die Hard/Elf get honourable mentions. Oh and Futurama Christmas eps for present wrapping.

So that's the story. And what was the real lesson? Don't leave things in the fridge.

The whole family meets up for three days of very traditional christmas dinners, Aquavit and christmas beer. We sing songs and eat cake by the fireplace. I love my family, big and crazy as it is, and this is the best time to see all of them in one room.

Xmass eve is Jan 6th. Family dinner, 12 dishes, no meat.
Fav tradition- kutya (a dish that's only made for the 3 big January holidays, consisting of wheat, poppy seeds, nuts, raisins and honey)
Favourite song- there's several, they're all carols in Ukrainian.
Favourite movies- Die Hard 2, Home Alone 1, Xmass rush.

Tradition: Rich fruit cake. Also a mince pie and brandy left out overnight, next morning they're "gone"
I'm making the cake this year as last years was a knockout success, just been feeding it some more rum as it matures.
Music: Pogues, Fairytale of New York. Yeah I know but I like it
Film: Gremlins 2, The Snowman
Zimtsterne = cinnamon stars. I've certainly had these in the UK
Husarenkrapfen = pastry with jam? Looks like something I'd eat
Springerlen = looks like shortbread?
Hildas = can't find what these are
Mandeltaler = almond biscuits with chocolate?
I was already in the baking mood - so far today rock cakes, sausage rolls and about to start mince pies - so may go for one or more of these too

Tradition: Family Christmas presents with everybody all at once.
Song: I Saw Three Ships
Movie: LITTLE WOMEN (the 1994 one with Winona Ryder)...and LOVE ACTUALLY. Both are must-watch every year.

My current supply at home
From left to right und up to down:
1. Zimtstern/Cinnamon star - Probably the same as in the UK (if you don't use flour)
2. Husaren Krapfen - Shortcrust pastry and jam in the middle
3. Spritzgebäck - You use a piping bag with a jagged metal tip to make them.
4.Mandeltaler - Yes, almond biscuit with chocolate
5. Springerle - The pastry contains a lot of egg foam, so no real shortbread
6. Cocosmakrone - A lot of coco inside
7. Forget the name. Dammit
8. And Lebkuchen
No Hildas to show. Sorry. I ate all of them. Shortbread with jam and sugar powder.

Speaking of Christmas, I've found a random Christmas radio station and have been listening to Christmas song non stop for a couple weeks now.
There's something incredibly cozy about it being dark outside and listening to Christmas songs. Even the Jesus stuff gets pretty good when you look out into the dark and think about how things were simpler but also harder once.
Christmas is hygge.

Tradition - Christmas trees. I just love everything about them. Apart from the deforestation I suppose.....
Music - none in particular but each year the right song comes on at the right time and I start to feel Christmassy. It happened in the car this morning with "It's Beginning To Feel A Lot Like Christmas".
Film - Elf. Watched it on Saturday night while putting the tree up and drinking mulled cider.

Tradition: Pancakes with Mimosas on Christmas morning
Song: It Came Upon a Midnight Clear
Film: I'm really not sure, actually... I guess I'll go with The Muppet Christmas Carol, but the only one we watch every year is It's A Wonderful Life (my mom's favourite)
