So this is fairly huge news, so I thought it fit here rather than in the Sanderson portion of the sub forum.

Sounds like they want to treat the Cosmere like a Superhero-esque franchise of multiple interconnected films.
They are starting with simultaneous productions of WAY OF KINGS and MISTBORN.
If this all goes to plan, this has the chance to be amazingly epic.
The biggest question...who will play Hoid?

I think in the end, Way of Kings will not be filmed. This works best as Mistborn first and then maybe Way of Kings if Mistborn is a hit (it should be).

The article reads like Sanderson sold his stuff to the Chinese and they want Way Of Kings first, having hired screenwriters behind a few Saw movies. This uh does not sound particularly good. Mistborn is clearly the better property to develop right now due to I Got Crabs's point above of it being done and Way of Kings not being done.

They're doing WAY OF KINGS and THE FALLEN EMPIRE simultaneously, or near-simultaneously.

I cannot think of any adaptation of new to the film audiences property that has ever done this model before.
If it works, it's truly unique. If one gets shelved (because usually producers only have energy and money and time for one movie), that's more in line with let's say Stephen King or Dan Brown. And if Way of Kings isn't the one that's shelved, that's surprising to me.

How long does it generally take for a movie to go from adapting a screenplay to the actual release date?

From the time a script gets written, a fast track probably is 1.5 to 2 years after that. That's A+++ treatment though - really only been done for absolutely huge books/movies.
For this one, which isn't A+++ in the book world on the level of Harry Potter or Game of Thrones, the path could take that amount of time, much longer, or get stuck in development hell like so many other books/movies before. Hollywood gonna Hollywood, even if Chinese influenced.

Given how straight up bad Way of Kings was, I can't see me ever giving a film version any of my time. It doesn't help that the whole Coldplay Universe thing is very forced and extremely tenuous (to the point it seems cynical to me).
Mistborn could be good, though. The books are short enough to translate well into films, and they have the right balance of action and development. I'd probably watch those.

Very curious to see if they attempt Elantris and Warbreaker if this gets going and is successful. I think those maybe the hardest to nail down. I'd have to say as of now I'd crave to see Wax and Wayne era most out of all novels out.
Both these books are unworthy of Movies!!!

The Mistborn movie now has a writer, whilst the first draft of the first Stormlight movie is apparently complete.

They should have just hired a Brandon to do it. He would have finished it on his lunch break in between wrapping up two YA novels and an epic trilogy.

Sanderson should start writing dialogue like this in Mistborn:
"Hey metal-mouth! Why don't you chomp on these rocks??"
