New trailer out so I thought I'd make a thread:

I think this looks really, really good just going by the reality warp shenanigans.

And as always I feel a bit of Danish pride when ever Mads Mikkelsen shows up in big Hollywood productions.

It looks amazing.

I sadly know next to nothing about doctor strange. Never picked it up.

Who is he and how does he fit into everything?

He's sort of a part of the trifecta of the Marvel Universe's power structure. You have your super powered, super technology powered individuals, that's the normal stuff Spider-man and the rest fight day to day. Then you have your alien cosmic threats like the Skrull coming to conquer Earth or Galactus wanting a planetary snack, that's the stuff the Fantastic Four and the Nova Corps fight. And then finally you have your mystical magical mumbo jumbo, like Mephisto stealing peoples souls or supernatural ninja necromancers. That's where Dr. Strange comes in.

Dr. Strange is The Sorceror Supreme. Which is both a title and an indication that he is best of the best. He's basically a very powerful, very knowledgable, very influential magic user who protects Earth (usually New York). Dr. Strange runs around fighting sorcerers, vampires, demons from hell, Elder Gods and other strange otherwordly dimensional foo.

It's always a pleasant surprise to see Benedict Wong in a drama, but I always wanna start laughing anyway.

Oh yah I do plan to watch that, but it's never at the top of my list so it keeps getting pushed back by new stuff. It sucks being in the middle of the pack!

I'm not a fan of Cummerbund and I've never read a Doctor Strange story outside the 1991 Marvel Super-Heroes Spring Special comic, but I'm super excited for this film.
"Here is light. You will say that it is not a living entity, but you miss the point that it is more, not less. Without occupying space, it fills the universe. It nourishes everything, yet itself feeds upon destruction. We claim to control it, but does it not perhaps cultivate us as a source of food? May it not be that all wood grows so that it can be set ablaze, and that men and women are born to kindle fires?"

I can't unsee him as Prime on the Countdown Episode of THE IT CROWD. Everything else I see him in, I think it's just Prime (Harold Tong) putting on a voice.

Found it very by-the-numbers, but entertaining enough.

Watched it there now.

Not bad, not usually my cup of tea when you get into the rapid changing landscape mind fuckery stuff. But quite well managed, Cumberbatch is a very likeable actor as well which helped a lot for me.
Marvel have got the comedy parts down in the film. A lot of actually funny physical comedy, which is quite hard to pull off without breaking the tone of the whole movie. And a few other decent running jokes/ good lines dropped in as well

Not the best Marvel film, but well above the worst.

Post credits scene was highly entertaining.

I would say a bit too much actually- there are moments when it could have gone for genuine emotion but went for a joke and ended up feeling glib. It particularly affected the relationship between him and Rachel McAdams' character.

All-in-all I found it entertaining but not terrifically memorable. I felt the magic could have been more out-there myself- it all looked very mechanical, which always kinda disappoints me (the early Harry Potters did similar) - and, Marvel-standard now, it didn't get great mileage out of its villains.

Still, decent start to the franchise.

I enjoyed it.

Sure, it's not the best Marvel film ever, but it was a pretty decent introduction to the characters and this other side of the Marvel universe. Personally, I'm kinda of the opinion that the animated movie (recently to be found on Netflix, at least in NZ, if anyone is interested) was a better representation, but this did perfectly well. I found the over-reliance on the world shifting to be the biggest let-down. There's literally no reason for that to have been half the action. Cool and all, and if it hadn't already been done in Inception probably not so bad, but really, these people have ACTUAL MAGIC. Why would their primary form of combat be manipulating the environment?

The Cloak of Levitation was the best character, though. >.>

I think the biggest thing with Kaicilius was that he essentially was just a person with eye makeup. That was kind of a let-down, villain-wise, when we didn't even get that much action out of Dormammu (though the way he got defeated was a great resolution to the problem, very Doctor Strange).

Also like what they did with the characters in this, making Kaicilius a villain instead of the guy who it was supposed to be, and then building into the movie said other characters start down the villain road. Good stuff.

I saw it yesterday, enjoyed it, and was very very very glad I didn't watch it in 3D, because some of the visuals were definitely going to make me hurl in 3D.

VERY MUCH THIS.

Some of the visuals were a little overwhelming to me in 2D.

3D? i'd probably have passed out or something.

Stunning achievement visually mind you.
meh. Link was dead :(
