I read a couple of Dalglish's self-published books that were free on kindle. They were passable, probably better than your average self-published freebie, but not very memorable.

I've enjoyed Moore's stuff in the past. Haven't read Seven Forges yet.

Emperor's Blades is really good. I tried a sample of Dalglish and didn't care for it. Otherwise, I've not heard of the others.

I read Seven Forges and was slightly entertained by it. Not enough to read book 2 however. I found it to be rather mundane as far as fantasy goes. Though I am a huge fan of Angry Robot publishing so I would certainly suggest checking out their website for other books to read

I' m amazed people here liked Emperor's Blades, IMO, it was just a (very bad) imitation of the Prince of Nothing series by Scott Bakker. Even the description of different minsiters of empire and the capital were similar.

How are they similar? I've read both and it would never occur to me that the two were similar in any way. Two of the three main POVs in EB are apprentices and the central story line is the plot against the emperor. There's no impending apocalypse, schools of magi, mysterious prophet......etc. I can't call to mind any similarities between the two but I don't remember the different ministers or descriptions of the capitals, so.....maybe. As to it being bad, to each his own. I don't know of any book that is universally praised.

I liked this one. I read the first one and the second one and thought it was pretty good. It is not spectacular but a good read. Now his Half Orc book I could not even finish. The Palladin book I got through the first one but have no intention of picking up book two.

Agree with Baco tbh, don't see the similarities at all.

For the sake of honesty, should point out I only read the first Bakker book and never bothered with the sequels, mainly as i'd just finished reading extensively about the Crusades before I read it, and it just didn't work (for me)

"A Dance of Cloaks" ShadowDance - David Dalglish

One of the most underrated fantasy authors to have a book out this year. He's a self pub man but recently he cut a deal with Orbit to re-release his ShadowDance series and this opp. gave him the chance to go back over all the books and change what he didn't like not to mention add 2 more to the series (6 in total-with the last coming out in 15'). I would def check out all 5 that are out now, they aren't hard reads but they were very enjoyable in my opinion. Swords, Assassins, Guilds, Magic, Elves, Gods, Dark Paladins, what more could you want??

I read this one..its like old school Heroic Fantasy..forgotten realms-esque.

I liked the emperor's blades..mainly for its sequel as it seems promising.

I was just going to chip in and say I'd enjoyed the Emperors' Blades... but then I realised I hadn't actually read it and I was confusing it with traitor's blade which was good, so am going to pick it up on the strength of recommendations in this thread.

I have seen Dalglish's books around alot, but haven't got round to reading them yet.

You should check them out but don't go into them with any expectations of reading a Malaz level book because its way light compared to other S&S Fantasy. Overall I think it is an enjoyable series and one that isn't so complex where you will constantly need to check the earlier books for things you missed or character names.


P.S. .....Thren Felhorn makes any non-magic Claw(cept Kalam) look like a peasant in a cape.
