I like Chance. Considering it's a shinai, for kendo, perhaps go for Kikai (機会). I think that's correct.

Correct translation, but the Japanese rendering makes it kind of a weird name for a sword.

無限刃 "Mugenjin" is cool, but a little too dorky/presumptuous for a shinai. Literal translation is "unlimited blade". Unless you know the members of this kendo club would totally think it was super awesomezorz or whatever.

Personally, I recommend "Oni" 鬼 which just means "ogre". Just make sure you hit really hard so it lives up to its name. :)
You’ve never heard of the Silanda? … It’s the ship that made the Warren of Telas run in less than 12 parsecs.

I was going to say this as well. And whenever it's time to draw it I would do the Tick's "Spooooon!" cry.

Is naming a sword common practice in Japan or is it more of a western thing? Should a sword have a name? For what reason would a swordsman name his sword and where / for what reason would he choose that particular name?

I've never even considered giving my iaito a name before but perhaps I should jump on the bandwagon...? To be honest, unless there's a good reason for it, in keeping with Japanese tradition, I'm a little bit skeptical.

That is a delicious idea.

EDIT: ベーコンの破滅 as a possible translation of Bacon's Bane (bekon no hametsu)? It wasn't very clear on how to translate 'bane' so I could be wrong.

Oh dear... How did I miss this thread when it started!

That's not the suggestion for a name by the way, that would be really awkward....

How about:

Period (You know, a Force of Nature that brings many-a-man(or woman) to their doom.)

Special K

Whacko

Wet Noodle

Amen Ramen

VINTA (Violence Is Not The Answer, for sarcasmic effort)

And last but certainly not least........

BOOMSTICK!!!!!!! (C'mon..... Army Of Darkness!)

I guess if you want some serious names you can find some good ones by searching Baby Names on google. They will have a good selection of names that have meanings in various languages. I have a good book that does the same - but it is rather difficult to use in this situation as I don't know if you want male or female names, or if you want a range of languages or just a few... Gaelic is one of my favorite sources for good names, Old Norse as well though some are rather hard for people to pronounce.

More information would help, if I knew more of what you really wanted it'd make it easier to throw options out for ya!

Or take a leaf out of Iain M Banks's book, and name it after the fashion of a Culture ship.

'Sorry, I Thought You Were Out'

'Minor Difficulties With Interpretation'

'Time I Was Going'

'Caught Napping'

'Differently Real'

'There's A Saying That Covers This Situation...'

'Don't Say I Didn't Warn You'
