So...this is my first attempt at fan-art...period. I have to say that I've never come across a series so inspiring and characters all with stories as compelling as these. I started this sketch of Karsa Orlong last night, and even though I have a long way to go with it, thought it would be worthwhile to get the opinions of others at this stage in the drawing. Any criticism is welcome!

I think its a good start. Welcome to the forum and this is a great place for advice.

with that in mind... I think your image is proportioned well enough but like j2tks said
it needs a bit more width. Karsa is a hulking figure. heres a tut Fausti
posted a while back.

maybe this would help?

Yep definitely needs bulking up, but you've got his face right. All scowl-y and grim

Thanks for the input! I was thinking last night after setting down my sketch book and looking at it from a distance that he was too thin, but convinced myself it was a good "typical" hero form. Thankfully, you've helped me see the light! I'm going to finish my pencil sketch first since I'm in the middle of figuring out how I would like his shell armor to look and how these shells are going to be arranged, and then I'll work on editing proportions in Photoshop since that's where I'll be finishing up with this. Again, thanks!

What's that blue question mark at the top of the OP?

it's there to drive you insane wondering what it is.

@ Q Ben, nice sketch, you got skills!

I see we're one the same page, hair-style wise...this is good. I also quite like his face :p

But I agree with the rest, more bulk! He's 8ft tall, but muscled enough to seem wide, after all :p

When starting a new topic one has the ability to assign an icon to the topic, by viewing the advanced options. Obviously Mr Ben felt as he was asking a question, the question mark would be appropriate. See below for example:

While I agree he could use a little bulking up, I suggest not going overboard with it. Most art I see of Karsa has him with these muscles that are so large, it frankly just looks stupid.
"Ignoring him, she stepped back out of the ellipse and began singing in the Woman's Language, which was, of course, unintelligible to Iskaral's ears. Just as the Man's Language-which Mongora called gibberish-was beyond her ability to understand. The reason for that, Iskaral Pust knew, was that the Man's Language was gibberish, designed specifically to confound women."

Sorry I haven't responded lately....work has been hell. Thank you everyone for your input!
I started working on the task of bulking him up while remaining anatomically feasible (EsotericForest), and the urge to attempt my first speed-painting session hit me somewhere near the temple.... I haven't gotten very far in it (2 hours, basic colors and shading in place), but with one more week left of work before vacation it shouldn't be too long before going back to finish the speed painting and then back to altering his appearance.

Here's where his sword is right now:

It's still pretty flat and needs a lot more detail. How does the color feel? I was thinking of adding some amber hues to it...

I like it. Its uneven finish has a very natural feel.

you could explore a few options.

I Like the chipped up look of the blade edge. I think SE takes some time
explaining how Karsa made the blade. he basically chipped out a strong
vein within a particular stone. perhaps in colouring this you can show
the characteristic striping of sediment?

Also I learnt that flint swords are ridged or arched profile-wise
towards the centre. this helps to prevent the blade from being
brittle. The images of the swords I google constructed in that manner
don't look very reliable.

Just throwing it out there for you to think about.

Can't wait to see the rest :)

i like the sword a lot,:)

personally id make it wider, and in my minds eye i see it as dark grayish(flint) with translucent chipped edges.

you've inspired me to have a go Qben, it'll probably be a pencill sketch as i havent used photoshop yet(will have to learn)

:)

Finally back at it! Finishing up the series kind of took all my time and now that it's done, I realized my previous version of Karsa infuriated me, so I went back to it with a fresh eye and a better vision for what I wanted. I've included the old version to the right of the new one to illustrate how different the look is.
I still need to add his tattoos, damage to the seashell armor, and his "trophies" attached to his belt.

your new version is looking better overall but i really liked the 'chipped' detail on the sword in the older version.

Thanks! I still plan to keep the chipped look to the sword, it's just sheathed to his back in this drawing. I hope to continue drawing inspiration from this wonderful pool of characters.

Here's an update. I've only had a few short opportunities to work on it, so the progress is slow right now.
