This is something that always gets me, trying to picture the Malazan soldiers, who seem to wear most armours except full plate.

I've used a mixture of Late Roman to early Medieval references and started roughing out ideas. I'm really not sure about the helms though! These are wips and mainly focus on the armour rather than characters, so I'd welcome feedback, stuff I've missed or other ideas.

So far the upper paintings are something close to a standard marine and a sapper, the lower a heavy and seasoned marine.

Nice stuff.
Hello, soldiers, look at your mage, now back to me, now back at your mage, now back to me. Sadly, he isn’t me, but if he stopped being an unascended mortal and switched to Sole Spice, he could smell like he’s me. Look down, back up, where are you? You’re in a warren with the High Mage your cadre mage could smell like. What’s in your hand, back at me. I have it, it’s an acorn with two gates to that realm you love. Look again, the acorn is now otataral. Anything is possible when your mage smells like Sole Spice and not a Bole brother. I’m on a quorl.

Nice indeed!

For the Heavy, I'd make the kite shield a bit broader - around 6 inches each side.

I know the description says "kite shield", but I've always liked the Roman scutum far better as a shield. It turtles up so much better and makes the "cloze-up" an effective tactic.

That's exactly what I was thinking - the shield doesnt look wideenough to cover such a large guy.

Other than that, pics looks stunning. I like the seasoned marine.

Thanks for feedback :D, always appreciated. I'll do more work on the shield and try a more Roman version based on the scutum.

@ Garak, I'll be working on more, see what I can find on officers and cavalry (especially the Wickans).

Don't get me wrong. Your seasoned marine is freakin' amazing. Your heavy is almost there - but for the shield. I finally have a great image of Detoran.

Sappers have packs for the bombs - I think Cuttle at least has a knapsack of some sort, while Fiddler has a framed backpack. Not 100% on that one. I know the Moranth have backpacks as well.

i always imagined the shield the heavies carried as more of a tower shield design as it would cover them more and be easier to lock together other then that they look brillant, i always found it hard to emagine what the soldiers looked like

the Moranth

Had to mention them :D. Now, I'm wondering what they look like. I always imagined them in armor similar to the bonemold armor from TES III.

I always imagined the officers with horsehair crests on their helmets.

Put a bit more time into the heavy, changed the right arm and added the shield, plus a few other tweaks. Got to sort out the values now.

Maybe more medieval cross-hilt of sword? I know you wanted roman style:) Also I suggest longer chain coat or put some metal on thigh? This looks volnerably...
But great work, I fear him!

The shield should ostensibly cover the thighs. There'd be leather there anyways, and the artist has heavy clothing there to suggest that. Well done.

Triarii, who I see as part of heavies had also longer chain coat (this man grabbed it for RTW fairly well http://media.moddb.c...e-12.php.1.jpeg )as many other heavies in history, because shield isnt always "at place"

but

the picture actually has longer cover for thighs, I just didnt saw it on netbook screen:) And Im really not saying its not well done - rather opposite, greatly done...;)

The difference between the Triarii picture you link to and the Heavy is that the Triarii guy has greaves with knee caps. There is no significant difference in terms of chain length between the pictures.

And I see that you noticed that too. We're both on record as rather liking these pictures - I wouldn't accuse you of doing anything, but offering helpful and constructive criticisms.

How about the overlapping qualities of shields? I seem to recall a spartan shield-locking routine similar to the spartans in RotCG...
Ofcourse the romans did the same thing but this was an almost entirely different animal....perhaps a hybrid shield capable
of locking into a wall with other shields and (ala RotCG) locking into a box when charging ala chain of dogs

BTW smiles your stuff is just awesome.

\m/(*n*)\m/ <=like that awesome but times a million.
