Now that I have finished the 1st book in the series. All I can say about this particular character is..."holy shit is he a neat, complex and often baffling character"

Yeah, Kruppe is a character. Wait until you meet Iskaral Pust in the next book.

Iskaral is funny. Kruppe sometimes is funny, and sometimes annoying ;)

You either love Kruppe or you hate hi. Personally I hate him, but you'll probably see why he has that effect on people later in the series. And I agree with Siergiej, wait until you meet Iskaral (and his wife!).
Sanity is nothing more than an excuse for being boring.
